I use Firefox and maintain IE6 just to keep it (until I discovered Windows Update won’t work with Firefox — must have IE. grrrrr…..). I’ve made a conscious decision NOT to upgrade to IE7, but it keeps trying to force itself upon me. I’ve always caught it sneaking in, even though I’ve told it never to try again.

Unfortunately, hubby wasn’t so lucky, and it was the only browser he had installed. Now, his IE flashes a white screen and won’t load. (I have a similar problem with Netscape on my laptop, but haven’t worried about it, because the laptop also has IE, and I installed Firefox a couple months ago and use it exclusively now.) He’s tried everything I could find at Microsoft’s support site (not much), but it hasn’t worked. I tried emailing him a copy of Firefox so he could get on line and get a new version of IE, but Outlook Express automatically assumes everyone is an idiot and can’t be trusted to know when it’s safe to open an executable or to save one that’s been emailed to you, so he can’t get to it. When I saved it with a different extension, somehow it insisted it was still that type of file even after he changed the extension back.

Microsoft assumes the default user is a corporate customer with IT support to bring a new version when problems are experienced. They’re going more and more in this direction, and it’s why I’m committed to finding alternatives. For now, hubby will dial in with his laptop and try to download a version of IE to save to a thumb drive to transfer to his desktop (Remember, Sony doesn’t include software disks — they’re embedded somewhere on the hard drive. Where? I’m not sure).

For a guy who insists on using Lotus SmartSuite for his desktop application, he’s surprisingly resistant to any other type of browser. My solution is to remove the existing version which must have gotten corrupted in the upgrade and replace it with a clean copy.

Are we missing anything?

Has anyone had problems with upgrading to IE7?
