If you crave something a little, do you really crave it?

Cravings are typically associated with food or attention. Sometimes people crave food when they aren’t getting enough attention — or sometimes if they are getting too much of the wrong kind of attention. I wonder how many formal studies have been done on the relationships between those two cravings. That’s a rhetorical wondering. I don’t wonder enough to research the answer. If you happen to know or wonder enough to check, I’d love to hear what you find out, though.

I guess I crave new technology toys. I’m certain I have many more than I need. I have two iPods, two iPads, a Mac Mini, a MacBook Air, two digital cameras, and a host of associated gadgetry. That’s within a three foot radius of where I’m sitting.

Predictions are out for two new iPads this year with higher resolution screens. There’s always a newer and more exciting MacBook Pro around the bend. But, really, I like to buy the best I can afford and make it last for as long as possible. I justified the iPad2 because I’d purchased the base model iPad the year before — just to see if it was viable. It was, so I maxed out the iPad2 version (still in Wi-Fi, though), so I can’t justify a replacement as quickly. I should be able to wait a generation or two before springing for another one. I’ve been planning to buy a 17” MacBook Pro for about four years now, but I cannot justify the expense. I wasn’t even sure I wanted to embrace the Mac OS X operating system when I began planning to spend more the $3000 for a laptop computer. Reason prevailed, and I bought the Mac Mini back in 2008. I became a Mac convert as a result of that, but I still can’t bring myself to spend more than $3000 for another computer at this point.

I think I have a few more years left in the Mini, the Air, and the iPad2. that doesn’t mean I won’t be tempted. And I still really want an iPhone, but I’m not wild about springing for a dataplan. I’m’ eligible to upgrade a phone in November, so I’m keeping an eye on iPhone developments. We’ll see. It’s a craving I can control, but I don’t always want to.

I know the prompt says “Something I Crave A Lot.” Isn’t that redundant?
