After being in this community for ten years, we were finally in town on the weekend of their biggest annual event — The Dewberry Festival. It’s a nice, little local event.\u00a0 The Classic Car Show brought an interesting variety of vehicles — most newer than 1950.\u00a0 There was a pleasantly surprising number of Corvairs attending.<\/p>\n
We went early in the day, shortly after eating breakfast, so we didn’t sample the variety of food available, but I was pleased at the selection of carnival type food as well as local baked goods from local vendors, most of them charitable causes.<\/p>\n
I was personally disappointed by the non-food vendors.\u00a0 I’ve noticed a disturbing trend toward what I can only call “bling” sellers in town.\u00a0 These, for the most part, are not home made crafters but sellers of cheap jewelry and other baubles they are probably able to buy inexpensively in bulk and sell for a large mark up.\u00a0 Maybe it’s good for profit, but I’m surprised people will spring for it — especially in a town where unemployment is supposed to be a number one problem.\u00a0 I guess necessities are too expensive, so people feel better by purchasing cheap junk?<\/p>\n
Perhaps the most interesting vendor was a local kennel with small, furry puppies (I’m not familiar with the breed) and dachshund puppies.\u00a0 Hubby didn’t let me stop and look.\u00a0 We have plenty of fur kids, and I’m the first one to say so, but he also knows the allure of a dachshund puppy.<\/p>\n
The kids’ fishing contest was in full swing around the pond — with what appeared to be great support from the local Game Warden.\u00a0 Fully half the park was reserved for the BBQ cook-off contestants.\u00a0 I’ve come to realize, after attending the County Fair and this event that BBQ competition is big and serious business.<\/p>\n
