{"id":342,"date":"2012-02-23T10:49:21","date_gmt":"2012-02-23T16:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jeanschara.com\/?p=342"},"modified":"2023-03-28T09:21:17","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T14:21:17","slug":"day-14-eyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/day-14-eyes\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 14: Eyes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, I&#8217;m playing with the posting order again.\u00a0 This time, I&#8217;d like to try to get a fresh sunset photo.\u00a0 I have one from a few years ago, which I can always post, but I&#8217;m going to see if I can get a new one.\u00a0 In the mean time, I examined the upcoming topics and &#8220;Eyes&#8221; called to me.<\/p>\n<p>I talk often about my wonderful kitty, Natasha, how well she and I have bonded, and what a joy she is to have in my life.\u00a0 But I almost didn&#8217;t get her, because, you guessed it, of her eyes.\u00a0 And I think it&#8217;s important to talk about that.<\/p>\n<p>First, the picture:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-345 size-medium\" title=\"DSC00008\" src=\"https:\/\/pmtoo.jeanschara.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSC00008-281x300.jpg\" alt=\"Natasha's Eyes\" width=\"281\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSC00008-281x300.jpg 281w, https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSC00008-768x821.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSC00008-958x1024.jpg 958w, https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/DSC00008.jpg 1314w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not necessarily as obvious now, but if you look carefully at Natasha&#8217;s left eye, you can tell it&#8217;s a little different from her right eye.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like her third eyelid is kind of stuck.\u00a0 I think it was a little more noticeable when she was younger than it is today (or in October 2010 when this photo was taken).<\/p>\n<p>In the Petfinder photos, this was visible, and the listing addressed it by saying something to the effect of it was from a past problem but didn&#8217;t affect her now.\u00a0 Which is true. But it gave me pause when I was picking out a potential kitty.<\/p>\n<p>How much more empty would my life be if I hadn&#8217;t decided to overlook a minor cosmetic anomaly in Natasha&#8217;s profile picture on the &#8220;online match site&#8221;?\u00a0 (My veterinarian in AL told me he could fix it if I wanted, but I decided if it didn&#8217;t bother Natasha, why should I put her through what amounted to a cosmetic procedure?)<\/p>\n<p>I will tell you it&#8217;s hard to imagine life without Natasha.\u00a0 Since she&#8217;s ten this year, I can&#8217;t expect that many more years with her, so I know I&#8217;ll have to find out, but she&#8217;s a very special kitty (even if she snubs The Cat Whisperer, much to his continued chagrin).<\/p>\n<p>This subject is of far wider concern than choices made when choosing to bring a new pet into our home.\u00a0 How often to we look at a person and, without knowing anything about them, judge their worthiness or character based upon appearances?<\/p>\n<p>We are a visual society.\u00a0 How I wish this were not true.\u00a0 How many opportunities for wonderful, meaningful relationships do we miss because something or someone doesn&#8217;t &#8220;look&#8221; right?\u00a0 (And, really, what defines &#8220;right&#8221;?)\u00a0 How many employers miss out on a wonderful employee because the hiring interviewer judges their employability based upon a physical feature that has little to do with a potential employee&#8217;s ability to do the work required for a certain job?<\/p>\n<p>What opportunities are we missing because we&#8217;ve dismissed someone because they are overweight, have significant body art, have a physical deformity, have an unusual hair color or style, or don&#8217;t wear clothing we think is right for a certain situation?\u00a0 Yes, sometimes those judgments will be well-founded, but how often would they be wrong?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little easier to be judgmental about things people have chosen to do to themselves, but, especially in the case of things people have no control over &#8212; body type, skin color, eye color, ethnicity, or physical variations &#8212; how can we as a people learn to ignore those things and look for the person inside the body and the value they possess?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, I&#8217;m playing with the posting order again.\u00a0 This time, I&#8217;d like to try to get a fresh sunset photo.\u00a0 I have one from a few years ago, which I can always post, but I&#8217;m going to see if I can get a new one.\u00a0 In the mean time, I <span class=\"excerpt-dots\">&hellip;<\/span> <a class=\"more-link\" href=\"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/day-14-eyes\/\"><span class=\"more-msg\">Continue reading &rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-342","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-photography-challenge"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_likes_enabled":true,"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=342"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":15417,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/342\/revisions\/15417"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=342"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=342"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jeanschara.com\/pmtoo\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=342"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
