Otherwise, as far as he’s concerned, it’s useless. He makes phone calls with it and uses the mobile hotspot capability. Once in a while he’ll take a picture with it, but he usually erases it after he shows me what he wanted me to see. This is why we were going to get him a base model iPhone 4S, but the argument that when LTE became more widely available, he’d want that for the mobile hotspot (and that is true — much appreciated now that it’s our only internet access in San Antonio, which has good LTE availability) convinced us to go with the basic iPhone5 for him.

So what might he like about IOS7? Maybe (and that’s a big maybe) the Control Center. Why won’t he like it? Icons. He hates (as I do) trying to figure out what the darn pictures mean. But being able to swipe the screen and put it in Airplane mode for bingo? He might like that. I mentioned the built-in flashlight capability, and he scoffed, saying you could get an app for that (says the man who doesn’t have an Apple ID and doesn’t want one), but he’s ignoring that this will be a standard feature now. Shrug. Fine with me. That’s it. I don’t see anything else in IOS7 of even remote interest to Mr. L.

What about me? I use my iPhone for nearly everything. As a mobile device, there are certain things I prefer to use my iPad for (larger screen), but, generally speaking, the iPhone can do it all if necessary. What, if anything, caught my eye during the introduction? Control Panel. Photo organization capabilities sounds intriguing. Maybe some of the changes to Safari. I’ve tried other IOS browsers, and I’ve not been happy with them. I’m not wild about Safari, so there’s room for improvement in my mind. I’ll take a look at multi-tasking, but doesn’t seem to be anything of interest. As far as I can tell, you’re still limited to one app on a screen at a time. I guess there isn’t much more of interest for me on IOS7 either. Supposedly, there are some power usage enhancements, and those will be welcome.

The other item of interest (other than the sexy new MacBookAirs introduced) is OS X Mavericks. They’ve run out of big cats and seem to be employing wild horses to drag you away from Windows now. That works. I’ll talk about what that’s supposed to bring in the next edition of Tech Stuff.

What about you? Does anything announced for IOS7 capture your interest?

Apple announced a number of new things at their World Wide Developer Conference on Monday. One of those things is IOS7. I watched Engadget’s live blog of the presentation with interest from two perspectives — the way I use my iPhone and the way Mr. L uses his (which are … Continue reading →

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[64

post-6347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tech-stuff
["GET
