I installed App Store purchases from the App Store. That worked fairly well, except for the apps that have been updated to require Mavericks. I was able to drag older versions from the back up and use those (Typist was the big one there.) Other apps dragged and dropped well, and I re-entered registration data and had to do some configuring. This saved me the hassle of having to download the app, so that was useful.

I posted a little about my woes on Facebook, and my friend, Melody, steered me toward an app she’d recently heard being recommended called SuperDuper!. What I like about this app is it creates a bootable backup (if you want one). I’ve decided to abandon Time Machine (I re-partitioned the hard drives to keep a couple old backups just to be on the safe side, but SuperDuper! will have it’s own partition) and use SuperDuper! I still use Dropbox for all data and anything I need to access from more than one computer. All I had to do on the Mini was install Dropbox, and my data downloaded — including photos. I’d been using the free version of Dropbox until last fall, then I ran out of space, and I didn’t have an easy way to get more free space quickly, so I have been a paid customer of Dropbox since then, and I don’t regret it for an instant.

To recap, I’ve abandoned Time Machine. I’m using SuperDuper! to create a regular bootable backup of my system. But the real key for me is still Dropbox. I’m evaluating off-site backup services, and, so far, if I decide to go that route, I’ll probably use CrashPlan. A friend got caught in the nasty Western Digital upgrade to Mavericks hard drive crash (that process killed one of my backup drives, too), and he recovered his wife’s photography business via CrashPlan. The same article recommending SuperDuper! also recommended CrashPlan.

Dropbox is my friend. I use Dropbox for nearly everything.

* If you use this link and complete a sign up for Dropbox, we will each receive and additional 500Mb are storage space on Dropbox. If you don’t want to use my link to earn that little benefit for both of us, just go to http://www.dropbox.com and sign up.

Computer backup solutions are a challenge. You don’t know if they really work until you need them. Then it’s too late to find out they don’t. Since shortly after I got my Mac Mini in November of 2008, I’ve had a one terabyte external USB drive connected to it that … Continue reading →

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[64

post-7128","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tech-stuff
["GET
