Office Hard Drive
Within hours this morning, my computer techs had delivered a rebuilt machine to my cubicle. Meanwhile, I’d found more files I needed to save off to the USB hard drive, AND I was trying to continue to work. This weekend was the time for the annual, “Eek! We have no money!” drill that has been an annual event for the last 25 years of my career. This always comes as a complete surprise to everyone and the immediate direction is, “Nobody travels anywhere until God blesses it as mission essential.”
For the people traveling next week, this is a minor inconvenience. For the people trying to travel tomorrow, this was a bit of an anxiety causing event. Because, in truth, we DO have money. For people who have not been prudent in their planning, this drill was a problem. We pretty much have our stuff all in one sock, so it’s an annoyance for us. I don’t have the final word, but our stuff should be OK. Two-thirds of what I do is one of my boss’s top priorities. It also has a different funding line, so we have more control over it.
In between all this, I’ve managed to get most of my email files transferred to the new machine and operational. Two-thirds of My Documents have made it. I’ll need to bring the machine home tomorrow night to make sure the VPN and RAS (Remote Access Server) works. I got a printer installed (still can’t get the right driver to get it to do duplexing though, but I hadn’t figured that out before). Still have to install the two color printers and the one that I know duplexes. And, finally, I need to install the software for doing our travel authorizations. Oh, and all those saved website passwords? I’ll have to find them and save them again. Argh! Oh, and Outlook 2003 is just bizarre.
At least the old machine still works, so I can hang onto it until I get everything configured. Tomorrow morning, I have my PRK Pre-OP, and tomorrow afternoon I have a meeting to discuss a new process we’re trying to figure out. Sometime AFTER all that, I’ll get to resume work on this stuff. Sounds like another late night at the office. And I sense gathering gators while I’m playing around with this stuff. I think I’ll be doing some gator wrestling for the rest of this week to ensure things will go smoothly while I’m out convalescing next week.
Somewhere in there, I’ll get back to working on Twilight.
