It’s Only Music, But…
Mark Cuban blogs about something we writers should be very interested in–he proposes a music tax. As one of his commenters points out, how long before we pay an “I got shot” tax or, in our case, a tax to protect the intellectual property of our writings. The $750 per year he proposes for commercial intellectual property sounds a bit steep for your average working writer (even the $100 per year he proposes for the non-commercial property–intended to protect the idea–sounds steep to me).
From Mark Cuban’s perspective this makes a lot of sense. I’m not certain it makes sense for the copyright owner. Well, it might make sense, but it doesn’t sound fiscally feasible. It’s certainly food for thought. While it is just an idea of his, I doubt he’s the only one who’s thought of it, and some of his commenters are already in tune with my thinking.
