“I’ll be back.”
I love to hear “I’ll be back” or “I’ve put you on my favorites” from real readers; however, I hate reading it on comment spam posts. That’s the type of chatty comment spammers write in their comment spam to make the unwary blogger think someone’s actually visited their site and found what they had to say thought-provoking. Ha! Fat chance!
Since previously unapproved comments on this site all go to moderation, spam posts never see the light of day, and thus, don’t get picked up on search engines (and supposedly, WordPress is configured so that doesn’t happen even if I did let them post). Since I do sometimes get new real commenters, I have to personally scan all their crud to make sure I don’t miss a legitimate commenter. That’s the only real hassle.
I think all the plug-ins just send suspected spam to moderation anyway, so there’s no point in installing one and adding the complication to the site. If someone knows of a Plug-In that works like Yahoo’s spam email catcher or Earthlink’s Spaminator, please let me know, and I’ll investigate.
At Blogger they added the word verification feature to deal with that, but I have so much problem with it. Not quite sure why…
Template – you’re back with the original one – was that the general vote?
I have trouble with some of the fonts on the word verification feature. At least it gives you a second chance.
Regarding the template, I don’t think anyone really voted in high numbers for this one, but I still like it. The others have some features I hope to add eventually, and your comments helped me know which ones are useful or not useful for you guys.
On my word press, I was using spam karma and now my web person has installed something called bad behavior (both WP plug-ins) The spam doesn’t wait in moderation – it’s just gone.
Good luck with the spam issue, Jean. I guess there’s nowhere safe from spam.
I have problems with some of the fonts on blogger, too, but it’s better than having nothing. 🙂
Thanks, Steph. I’ll look into that.
Added note: Downloaded and installed. Fingers crossed (that 207 spams earlier today was most inspirational, and your post was most timely).
Hokey nellie! 207 spams? That’s even worse than when I had my blog on my own site! So far I have kept my Blogger account set to only other blogger folk, and it seems to be working. I haven’t had to go to word verification yet, but I’m willing to do it if necessary. I also close comments on my posts after a few days, so that things can’t build up in the back forty when I’m not looking.
Closing comments after a few days makes sense, Val. I’ll take care of that tonight on the Blogger accounts.
