Reworking Chapter 1 for T&T
In addition to deleting what seemed like 5k (but was really only 3.5k) of my NaNo novel to kill the crap after the first scene, I’ve done a little restructuring to make it easier to follow.
I’ve subdivided chapters by year. Instead of chapters, I think I’ll have parts. Part I, Childhood. Part II, College. Part III, The Twenties. Part IV, The Thirties. If there’s anything after that, it’ll probably be Part V, Life or something like that.
I’ve replaced 2.5k of that 3.5k with material more relevant to moving the story, and I believe it will be stronger because of it. I can tell I’m going to have to get even more ruthless with words–they keep creeping in when they just don’t contribute must-have stuff to the story.
I’ll probably need one more good pass on Part I, but after that, I think I’ll have it and can move on to Part II.
I like your parts idea. It sounds like it fits the novel progression.
I take my hat off doing all that reworking. It’s the part I dislike most.
