Balancing the Scales
On one hand, I tore the meniscus in my “good” knee (which immediately renders that term useless–now I just don’t have a good knee). I’m on crutches and a brace for a couple days to see if it settles down. I suspect the meniscus has been torn for several years and just flared up again yesterday.
On the other hand, my husband informed me this afternoon that I’m a new mother–by sending pictures of Ajax, our new 8-week old Siamese seal point kitten. Pericles has been lonesome and Velcro(TM) Cat since Magellan died last year, so now he has a brother. For those of you counting, we now have six “kids” between us–three feline and three canine; three male and three female.
On one hand, reading is still going very well for this year–twenty books so far and counting. (Deep Breath is progressing nicely and will probably be #21.)
On the other hand, writing is going not so well. Everything I write feels dull and mundane. This time will pass, but it’s ugly.
No, I don’t have four hands, but there are so many times when that would be convenient (such as, when I’m on crutches, but, fortunately, that never happens).
My husband just had his 2nd meniscus repair in January (tore the first one in July, had that repair in August.) He was committed to the PT regimine they gave him because he’s really active and wanted to regain full mobility to run, play tennis, etc. He said the surgeries were totally worth it for him – and he’s heard a lot of horror stories before he went in.
The surgery, really, is a piece of cake (as is the physical therapy). It’s not the meniscus that’s the real problem for me. It’s the Grade IV or V arthritis. In a week and a half, I get another exam. If my PA hears the “click,” he’ll refer me to the orthopedist, and we’ll likely begin the MRI process. On the one hand, I want this–I’m reasonably certain this knee has arthritis equal to the other knee, and the MRI will validate that suspicion. On the other, it increases the likelihood that I’ll be retiring sooner rather than later. I’ll be playing that by ear.
