8G iPod nano
Has anyone seen the new iPod nanos? They have a new anodized aluminum casing. They come in 2, 4, and 8G models. The 4G models come in several cool colors–I’m partial to anodized aluminum and blue, but you could fall in love with hot pink, a bright green, or basic black.
I’m intrigued by the basic black 8G model (only color it comes in). It sells for $249. Not a bad price, I thought. Then I thought again. Hey! USB drives are dropping in price, but the drives with 8G of space aren’t that plentiful or cheap. A quick look reveals 1G is still the common upper limit for them, and they sell for around $40-70. I’ll grant you that an iPod isn’t quite as simple to use as a USB drive, but it could come close — I know several people who use iPods to back up critical files from their laptops. I’ve backed up my hard drive to my iPod at one point or another, so it’s not impossible. That’s a lot of storage on something the size of one-quarter of a cigarette pack. I can’t quite say this is cheap, but it could be considered reasonable and dual purpose. As long as it will work with RealPlayer, I’m interested.
As for hard drive iPods, my 40G version is still doing ok, but I love the color screens on the two or three versions which have been released since I bought mine. The current 80G model is tempting, but I’ve heard about the touch screen model, which has to bring a slightly larger screen. To really reap the benefits of the color screen, it simply must be large enough to warrant storing video or images for viewing. Until then, my boring monochrome version that I haven’t listened to in months (because I’m not on transoceanic flights anymore — the primary time I used it) will do just fine.
I just picked up a black 2G nano. I like it fine, but why are all the ear buds white? I mean, really, just give me ear buds that match the ipod. That’s all.

I am sooo disappointed that 8g does not come in colours! my ipod nano is falling apart (literally; the hold button popped off when I was jogging) and it doesnt seem near as shiny, new and special as when I got it. I looove the bright green colour of the new 4g. but WHY doesnt 8g come in more colours!? I can’t fit even a quarter of my music onto my ipod, and I find it frustrating. I dont want to get it just because of that, but I have no choice.. I really couldnt live without an ipod.
I was disappointed about the lack of color choice, too. I’m waiting for iSkin (http://www.iskin.com/) to come out with the second generation cover. I hope they’ll come out with an armband version and a set of slims (that would give color versatility). They’re also offering a headphone deal of $14.99 a set in your choice of colors when you buy a skin. The quality on the iSkin looks (and I’ve heard it is) fantastic. And the price isn’t that bad, especially when you look at other similar items of generally lesser quality.
