Hosting Research
It’s that time in the domain registration process where I need to decide if I want to renew and retain the status quo or transfer and try someone new. I could be perfectly satisfied to renew with iPowerWeb. They have provided a solid hosting service with reasonable, effective, and efficient customer service on the few times I’ve needed it. They’re a little clunky, but for someone who doesn’t need a whole lot of handholding, they do a good job.
But I’m starting to think about mulitple domains and possibly needing multiple databases, and iPowerWeb doesn’t do that the way I would like. I’ve discovered a couple of other hosting services that provide the same storage and bandwidth while allowing more databases and hosting of additional domain names on the same account for the same amount of money — $6.95/month on a 24 month agreement.
Bluehost is one. I was very interested in them. Then I see they don’t host adult content of any kind. Now, if you’ve been here for any amount of time, you know I haven’t posted anything remotely meeting the definition of adult content. I just don’t think it’s appropriate on a site that could have people of all ages visiting it. That’s my choice. But *I* want to make that decision — not my hosting service. (Frankly, my current service may have a similar policy — I haven’t looked.)
Lunarpages comes highly recommended. They’re supposed to have wonderful tech support. Their Control Panel interface isn’t quite at up-to-date as Bluehost’s. They do allow any adult content permitted by California law. They allow unlimited databases and ten add-on domains. More than enough for what I’m thinking about doing.
My WordPress database is still a manageable size. I don’t have anything too complex. The Fantastico scripts library looks tempting — and activating those scripts is what takes all the databases.
What’s your site operating on? Do you have something in the 200GB storage, 2000GB bandwidth, multiple database, multiple domain hosting range for less than $7 a month over 24 month’s range? They have to be reliable, and they have to have a reasonably responsive and capable tech support function. What do you like about it? What could they do better? For what it’s worth, I use DreamWeaver. My current main site is done in FrontPage (need to update that). And, of course, the blog is in WordPress 2.1.1.
Yeah, iPower has the same policy as Bluehost. And I can understand why hosting companies have that policy. Who wants to mess with legality if someone crosses the line into illegal content?
Lunarpages and bluehost are both good big hosts. They have lots of good reviews. My site might help you a bit 🙂

I use Jatol – http://www.jatol.com. I found them through Holly Lisle and I’ve never looked back. Been with them for something like… I don’t know…3 years now. Never had a problem. I think I’ve had down time maybe once. Quick tech support, very friendly and cost effective. Check them out. I think I host 7 domains with them right now.
Ben,
I stopped in at your site via Jim’s. I do plan to leave an iPowerWeb review. I see they have very negative reviews, and in my experience, that’s not justified. They’ve been a solid hosting service, but I’m beginning to look for something more. I’ll also check out the article. Thanks.
Tina,
I also know about Jatol from Holly and FM. I’ve looked them over before, and they cost more than I needed to spend to get what I wanted. Now that my needs are changing, I’ll give them another look.
Thanks, ya with most people their support doesn’t do a very good job it seems. A lot of people get bad techs I think from the reviews.
thanks, Ben
Want to hear how big of a loser I am? I use GoDaddy. It’s okay, you can laugh. I’ve been with them for a little while now something like 1 1/2 years and the only real problem I have had with performance was caused by a WordPress plugin that overpopulated the DB. Once I cleaned that up everything has been fine. I have 6 domains and an equal number of databases. But only one of the sites gets an real traffic (200-400 pageviews a day). With the coupon codes it was something like $80 for the year if I remember correctly.
If I ever switch, I will probably go to Bluehost. Or just start writing on paper.
GoDaddy isn’t bad if you know what to expect and how to deal with support well 🙂
My website is through http://www.freewebs.com, but I dunno if they’re what you’re looking for. I’m using them because I have 1 GB of storage and it’s free. No cost to me. That’s why. But they also have a policy where you can pay that you might want to look into. I don’t know if it’s any help but that’s my contribution.
Jason
Mike, why would you be a loser for using GoDaddy? I hope that’s not a bad sign — I just began the switch for domain registration to them last night (need an authorization code to compete the transaction…)
Thanks, Jason. Free can be a wonderful (and sometimes essential) thing. I’ve reached a point where I’m looking for a more robust capability. I’m leaning toward Bluehost but haven’t finalized my decision yet. Keep the comments coming.
And Jim, the illegal content concern is one reason to stay away from a site which permits adult stuff — who wants their site locked down because the whole place has been carted off as evidence in a criminal trial? Not likely to happen, but the nightmarish thought has crossed my mind. Hubby’s ok with a more conservative site, and I don’t need anything more. No Half-Nekkid Whatever pictures for me. Scaring away the folks in the neighborhood is not a good thing.
Loser might be a strong word. They get a lot of grief from the more techy crowd pretty frequently.
I actually like GoDaddy…including their support. The few times I had to call it was always because I did something stupid and they talked me off the ledge. Their support is actually the main reason I’m afraid to try another service.
That’s good to hear, Mike. Their SuperBowl ads stink, but I knew about them before the ads, so I ignore that.
For those of you that are looking for a professional web hosting service at an economical price, try http://www.1and1.com. They have a special right now for $2.99 a month. I have been with them for years and I love them.
