Out of the Blu
I was just curious. So I searched. “Blu-Ray” “Apple” on the search window. Interestingly, the intersection of those two terms goes back to at least 2005. Hubby’s new Sony laptop has Blu-Ray capability (and he likes it — says the latest Harry Potter video looks fabulous (not his term)). I plan to buy a MacBook Pro for my next computer acquisition (if you’ve been reading here long, you know this). And I got to wondering…
Hence the search. Macworld reported in March, 2005, about Apple’s joining the Blu-Ray Board of Directors. That was nearly thee years ago. I wondered, what is going on lately? Sure enough, Apple is still on the Board of Directors. Engaget reported as late as January 3, 2008, about anticipation the Apple would bring Blu-Ray to Macworld Expo.
Macworld’s been and gone, but I don’t remember hype about Blu-Ray. Macbook Air (the notebook that assumes ubiquitous broadband Internet access — ha!), but not Blu-Ray. Industry buzz said Blu-Ray will be coming to Macbook’s by February. 2007. I double-checked the MacBook Pro site — nada. The buzz seemed to tie a new drive to the release of Leopard, though, so my hope remains alive that by the time I’m ready to purchase a new computer, it may, in fact, arrive with Blu-Ray inside. Buzz is the only thing supporting that right now, and I’ll just have to wait and see on official word.
I asked my resident Blu-Ray expert (17yo son with a Sony PS3), and he hasn’t heard anything about it either. He wants a Mac for his next computer, too, so I’m sure he’ll know as soon as it’s announced–the kid lives for electronics! 🙂
