Book Advertising
Every once inawhile I see an ad for a book on television. I’ve also heard book advertising on Glenn Beck‘s radio program. In fact, I think I’ve heard him advertising three books at a time lately. Out of curiousity, I checked his website, and, if you scroll to the bottom of the page, he has links to the books featured on the show.
Have you ever bought a book you’ve seen advertised on TV, radio, or in a newspaper? Why or why not? In my case, I believe the challenge (especially for TV or radio) is remembering the title long enough to get somewhere where you can obtain it.
Of the three primary conservative talk radio hosts, Mr. Beck is the one that takes the most getting used to. His sarcasm is an acquired taste, but I have to give him credit for advertising books on his show.
While writing this post, I got curious, and checked a few other places. Rush Limbaugh has a page on his site for the library where he posts links to books he likes. Sean Hannity has a book club. Of course, I think the original celebrity book club may have been Oprah’s.
Who else who has the public ear can you think of who recommends books?
Oh yeah. Two more days on the How to Think Sideways course sign up. Click here or on the sidebar picture for more information about the course.
Somebody was telling me about a book the other day, which they thought had been on Oprah’s list. That turned me off it right there. I’ve just not been too impressed with Oprah lately.
I don’t really have any place, in particular, that I pay attention to for book recommendations. Probably comes from my apprehension to worry about what movie critics say since I, so often, have movie preferences 180 degrees from the supposed “experts.” 🙂
You make a good point, FF. Sometimes a celebrity recommendation doesn’t help. I remember when a co-worker’s girlfriend (who I wasn’t too impressed with — either the co-worker or his girlfriend) gushed about “Angela’s Ashes” and told me I just “had” to read it. I still haven’t read it, and I have negative connotations for the book.
I have a bone to pick with Glenn Beck. I read his article titled ‘What’s Coming’ the other day, and toward the bottom he said in his next article he would tell us what we could do to protect our family. I haven’t seen that article yet, although I have seen a bunch of political crap. I’m not one to rush time these days, but I’m looking forward to political season being over. (I wonder if it’s coincidence that election day comes just before hunting season starts…)
LOL! You might have a point, there, EJ! I’m sure election day comes before everyone gets their firearms out–just in case! 🙂
There are public service announcements on the radio in the mornings that promote reading, and have book excerpts. By the time I get to work, I’ve forgotten the book already.
