Yard Sale
We ran a yard sale today (garage sale, tag sale, whatever you call them in your neck of the woods). I didn’t meet the deadline to get an ad in the paper, so we put out two signs this morning after we were set up (one at a strategic corner and the other in front of the house) — it helps that 25% of the town has to drive by our house anyway. We ran from 7-noon and had reasonable traffic most of the morning.
When all was said and done, at least eight boxes of stuff we’d been storing was gone. I have six boxes of books that we’ll drop at Half Price Books when we go to San Antonio next. Fifty percent of what we had out was books and puzzles, but that wasn’t really what people were looking for. Kitchen stuff moved well. I don’t usually put clothes out, but I had a couple items that I made available, and I sold about one-third of that.
People in this town, for the most part, are great yard sale attendees. They like to pay for something as soon as they pick it up, and they don’t, as a rule, haggle. I had a few people who asked if I could do better on a couple of items, and I was able to accommodate them. I tried to have most things priced to move if anybody wanted it. I have about a box and a half of collectible quality stuff that I need to price higher, and that stuff didn’t move here–I didn’t expect it would.
We don’t mind doing this once a year. Any more than that would be too much work. It’s fun to talk to people and to see what they’re interested in buying.
