Connectivity Matters
While on vacation in October, I inadvertently deleted my saved wireless connection for the San Antonio house. This is the first time I’ve been back here since September, so I’m attempting to re-establish the connection. It says it’s working, but for some reason, I’m not able to get past the wireless router. The ATT dongle works fine, so it’s probably some aspect my WEP security or something in my Windows XP wireless configuration that isn’t working. Windows is set to configure automatically, and since the wireless connects to the router with my passphrase, I’m not sure where I’m screwing up. I probably have to go into the router and turn WEP off and turn it off on the laptop to see if that allows me through. If it does, I’ll probably have to reconfigure WEP. I’d rather not do that, because then I’ll mess up hubby’s laptop configuration.
Before departing Central Texas, I received my new power supply for the desktop. Since it was a different model than the original, and it’s connections look different, I decided to wait until I had more time to install carefully. That task is delayed until after the first of the year. I need to pick up a long Cat 5 cable — the printer came up dandily on the network when I connected the network cable to it, so I prefer to not use the desktop as a print server anymore.
Other than that, it’s been drippy here, so we’ve been running errands and working inside. It’s supposed to be nicer outside later in the week, so we’ll begin cutting down dead trees and trimming back overgrown green stuff.
We picked up several jigsaw puzzles, and we’re working on those in the evenings. I’d like to resume work on How to Revise Your Novel and Polar Bear on the Loose, too.
I’ll have Eric read the part about the router. Maybe he’ll have some ideas. I’m no help; to me that stuff all sounds like Charlie Brown’s mom.
I’ve just verified the problem is isolated to the wireless connection. I connected a LAN cable, and it works fine. The dongle works fine. So, only wireless is causing the problem. I’m reasonably certain it’s a WEP issue.
