Making Life What You Want it to Be
Holly Lisle’s got a great post today: How do you make your life what you want it to be? Seriously. Go read it. Then come back.
Eons ago when I was stationed in Iceland, I was agonizing to a friend about something. Finally, he said something to the effect of, “When you’re ready, you’ll do it.”
Which was another way of saying, “When it matters to you, you’ll do it.”
It’s easy to get caught up in feeling guilty because your life isn’t what other people think it should be. And Holly’s right. If you’re not doing something you think you should be doing, it doesn’t matter to you. Not matter whether you think it should matter to you. If you’re not doing it, for some reason, it doesn’t matter. Intellectually, you know it should be important, but if you’re putting it off, it doesn’t matter. You need to find what DOES matter and make it happen.
I need to find what DOES matter and make it happen. I’m thinking about that a lot these days. Don’t have any answers yet.
I’m in the same boat. I’m also thinking I need to figure out what my pay-off is for things that, by this definition, don’t matter to me that I need to do. Silly things like exercise and cleaning the bathroom.
Cleaning the bathroom is a whole lot easier with FlyLady’s swish and swipe (I know you’re tired of FlyLady — not meaning to preach here), but keeping the sink clean is a constant battle. I keep reminding myself that I’m thankful hubby washes his hands, but would it kill him to pick up the sponge behind the faucet and do a quick swipe to get the dirty water spots wiped down? I guess so.
Exercise…eating right…not eating too much…eradicating clutter…the list goes on.
Oh, your post (and Holly’s) hit close to my current state of mind. I need to make changes but need to determine what they are and if I have the guts to implement them. 😀
