NaNo Day 1: 4,203
I’m very pleased with my first day’s word count. 4, 203 words completed. That means I have 45,797 words go go before the end of the month.
I’m writing Dickie’s POV first to maintain continuity. The flow of the story will be Dickie relating the story. Then, between his chapters, his dad will be reflecting upon what he’s just read and offering his commentary. The idea is to capture what it’s like for one family member to write a memoir about another family member, then having the subject of the memoir read it and comment.
To get a “genuine” response from Danny, I think I have to write Dickie’s POV first, then let “Danny” read it and respond.
And, now I’m wondering if it’s wise to have my two POV characters with names beginning with the same letter and ending in the same sound. I sense a name change. Probably Danny’s. Don’t be surprised.
Great start, and great plan! Go!
Yes, I think I would change the name. Even going from Danny to Daniel or Dickie to Rick or Richard would work.
Danny was sixteen when he married his fifteen year old pregnant bride (I believe, under protest). They named their first two children (one arrived each year for the first four years of their ten year marriage) Dickie and Janie. I suspect as a play on the Fun With Dick and Jane series from elementary school readers. Daniel, Jr., the third to arrive was followed by Ronnie (a girl) named after her mother (Rhonda). So, in my mind, Danny had to become something different, and Daniel, Jr. will change accordingly. I will probably go with it as is and do a Global Find and Replace when I’m done with the first draft.
