Day 3: A Picture of You and Your Friends
I just don’t have a lot of pictures of me and my friends. First, I don’t do pictures of people. I don’t have many pictures of me with anyone. I certainly don’t have many recent pictures. But, the prompt doesn’t call for a recent picture. So, we’re looking at a series of pictures. I looked through my digital archive, and “series†is “three.â€
First up, we have my chosen life partner — before we had that official designation:
Another friend of mine, Dane, took this at the 1992 Texas Folklife Festival. I believe this was in August. I was in Officer Training School. Hubby (in his pre-hubby days) was playing the festival, so he was in an appropriate costume — as, I guess, was I. (As a side note, the Air Force was still considering me too fat at this time — one reason I eventually lost all respect for their views on the subject.)
Second, we have my friend of longest duration. Her hubby took this photo the last time we saw each other. They were stationed at Governor’s Island in NYC at the time, and I was stationed at Fort Meade, MD. I rode the train up, and they hauled me all over NYC for a weekend. The Bronx Zoo provided a nice background for this photo., taken sometime between 1989 and 1991 — I think in 1989.
We’ve been friends since we were five. Well, Denise may have been six — she was born in February and I was born in August of the same year. We met in late July, right before I turned five, I think. We’ll say five. At this point, it’s splitting hairs.
Finally, we have my bestest buddy for the last six years, Natasha and me, taken in October, 2010:
I guess that wasn’t so hard.
Jean, you were so TINY!!! I was never that tiny. And the AirForce is off its rocker to think that’s overweight. Wow.
Great pic of you and Natasha!!
Love the pic of you and almost hubby! There is something about a man in lederhosen. 😀
That’s one of my favorite pics of the two of us — hubby and me. Natasha is wonderful in this picture. She’s my girl!
The AF wanted me to lose another 20 pounds from that point. They were never satisfied. A very frustrating experience, and the biggest negative in my entire career was that 28 year battle.
Jean, I’m honored to be included in your pictures. Wow, how do you remember when we met? I have so many fond memories of time spent with you – when we were little, in junior high and as adults – so glad we’re still friends!
Denise, it’s easier for me to remember, I think because Mom and Dad bought the house the summer before my sixth birthday, so I was still five when we moved in. Mom, Ann, and I were in Wisconsin staying with my grandparents while Dad got us moved in. I still remember when I got there for the first time the whole slew of neighborhood kids clamoring at the back door to meet me. I think it was you, the Lori Krieger, Shawn Miller, and Karla Schmidt. Who knows, Bob Kellogg may have even been in that group. I’m sure there was a crowd of six or seven of you at the back door that morning. Overwhelming! I have pictures of all of you at my sixth birthday party, which was shortly after that.
I think every event in a new place and time after that has been a disappointment. In today’s vernacular, I felt like a rock star. So sad to have never achieved that level of welcome again. And you know how the military tries to do just that.
I, too, am so glad we remain friends. It’s quite an accomplishment.
