Just Another Day in Mid-January
There’s a chill in the air. Hubby has a fire in the fireplace, making it cozy in the house. We’re in San Antonio taking care of a few errands. I got the truck serviced in preparation for a trip to Wisconsin in February. I got a much needed hair cut and my new lenses for my glasses.
Progressive lenses are much better for handling the in between distances, and I was screwing up by now using them as my primary glasses for the last couple of years. I was using my “good” glasses in my iPad case for on the go use. I used bi-focals and my over the counter readers most of the time. Big mistake. Since seeing my eye care professional in December and hearing her response to my complaint, I recognized and corrected my error. My vision has been much more satisfying, and I’ve had fewer headaches. With this new reader prescription and Progressive lenses, I’m very satisfied with my vision quality at all distances — Reader, computer, across the room, and across the street. Amazing.
Has anyone else notices that their hair changes as they age? Yes. Yes. Of course it gets grayer, and I expect some aspects of it will change, but one half of my head is a little curlier. The overall consistency of the hair feels more straw-like. I’m trying to figure out what nutrients might be missing to account for that. Any ideas?
Lastly, our chicken kitten, Tarzan, has finally seen fit to venture into the back yard on his own. He’s still very hesitant, but if we leave the back door open long enough, he’ll venture onto the threshold. He’s made it as far as the edge of the bricks on the patio (very cautiously). If we were going to be here long enough, he might make it onto the dirt. Given the weather we expect today and tomorrow, I suspect that will come on a subsequent trip. That’s a big difference from us putting him on the porch and having him run back to the door and plaster himself onto the back door trying to figure out how to get back in the house. That’s pathetic but amusing in a way that’s not painful for humans but understandably of concern to a scared kitty. We’re happy he’s choosing to venture into the vast wilderness of our fenced backyard.
In other news, Tarzan’s much more adventurous sister, Lady, found her way out of the back yard and was nosing the driveway gate looking for a way back inside. I suspect, since she’s discovered the joys of leaping onto trees, that she may have climbed the fence (we can’t see any way even a cat could slip under it). She was more than happy to come in when I opened the gate and called her. Lady would be an outside cat if we let her. She loves it that much. This, of course, sparked Natasha’s interest in escaping the driveway gate, so we decided it was time for the kitties to come indoors. When the back yard no longer holds enough stimulation to keep them interested, they’ve been outside too long.
Tarzan is so cute but I wonder if he has a fear of open spaces? I had a kitten during a summer at college (never outside) that went home to the farm with my folks that fall. It took Abby a few months to get over the scary sky.
Hair-wise, you may just have a bit of build-up from silicones or other additives. Try a clarifying shampoo (like a baby shampoo) then a deep conditioning treatment. YMMV. Otherwise, how are you doing on B-vitamins?
That’s a good observation on the open spaces for Tarzan. He’s been a housecat from the moment he was born, so the outdoors is a pretty big change. He’s not a scaredy cat in the house — he walks the ledge outside the upstairs railing of the stairs with no fear what-so-ever, which is much more dangerous than going outside in an enclosed, supervised back yard. (But he’s been doing the stair ledge since he was a tiny kitty, so it seems safe to him).
I’ll give the shampoo suggestions a try. I’m not sure on the B-vitamins. I’m not supplementing B, and I haven’t given it a lot of thought based upon my diet. I’ll look into it.
