A is for Antics
We’re kicking off Blogging A – Z for April on April Fool’s Day, so I thought it proper to look at “antic,” or more appropriately, “antics.” According to Visual Thesaurus, Antic, when used as a noun, means “a ludicrous or grotesque act done for fun and amusement.” If you’re using it as a verb, it means “act as or like a clown.” As an adjective, it means “ludicrously odd.”
April Fool’s Day, while not an official holiday, is widely celebrated with practical jokes or antics designed to catch friends, family, co-workers, or acquaintances off-guard. Some antics are elaborate while others are more casual. All are designed for a bit of fun. Sometimes, that fun gets out of control and causes problems, but most people roll with the spirit of the occasion and laugh off the results.
Two common practical jokes are turning a co-worker’s desk around or putting a Jell-O like substance in a coffee cup resulting in a spoon standing upright. I had a friend who converted her writing community site colors to a terrible color combination that assaulted the visual senses as a practical joke on the members.
Sometimes the antics extend to other times of year. One year, we gift-wrapped a co-worker’s cubicle for Christmas.
What are some antics you or, ahem, friends of yours have participated in and how did they turn out?
Well, I don’t remember trying anything that really WORKED. But, one year when I was still in high school my dad and niece went in on an April Fool’s joke. Ha Ha, still laughing, NOT.
They told me my car got smashed by a hit and run. My beautiful old, used Pontiac LeMans. I rushed to the window and looked out to see what was the matter, believing them wholeheartedly.
Still haven’t learned to entirely trust them. 😉
Look forward to you posts this month!
A friend’s daughter got me today. She changed her relationship status on FB to single and followed it up with a status of “:(” Several of us expressed disappointment, but then she put the picture of the real story up — she’d gotten engaged. I should have known better, but I got sucked in. Her family has a sense of humor that’s just like that, and apparently, the young man she’s been seeing for the last couple of years “gets” that.
Oh my goodness… So funny! Reminds me of how Jim tortures Dwight on The Office. 🙂 My husband is full of antics; he pretty much spends his days trying to make my daughter and I laugh.
My husband loves to make me laugh. I like that about him. 🙂
Interesting–April Fool’s Day was my pick for A last year. I always wanted to substitute the salt for the sugar but never had the courage.
Pam, I think April Fool’s is almost too obvious, but it also seems appropriate. Grin.
Well, there was the year I put salt in the sugar bowl before my step-brother had his morning cereal. My stepmom (the original Wicked Witch of the West) wasn’t amused, and she made me eat the result. It wasn’t MY fault he always scooped so much sugar on!
Ugh!
