Cats: Where They Stand
The weekly cat missive. Today we’ll talk about each cat individually to see what’s up with them.
Natasha is seeking warm places. She’s been pretty relaxed overall. She’s tolerating the kittens, although they extend her respect.
Ajax is Ajax. A little needy. A little jumpy. Watching with his soulful eyes. He spends a lot of time on the corner of the bed.
Lady seems to be tolerating Floyd better. She still goes after the other kittens if they don’t defer to her. She seems as if she’s feeling better. I hope her followup vet appointment goes well on the 12th.
Tarzan is wrestling with Floyd. He can clearly beat Floyd whenever he wants to, but Floyd is getting some good practice with Tarzan that he doesn’t get against the girls who are now slightly smaller than him.
Floyd is still the most dynamic of the kittens. He has adapted best to life with humans. He’s delightful, engaging, and very observant. He wants to fit in with the big cats, and that includes interacting with humans. He makes overtures to, and has mostly won over Lady and Natasha to the point where they don’t openly attack him. He’s a charmer. Floyd usually sleeps stretched out against my legs.
Delta is the cat I most picture someone dressing up in cat clothes and playing with. She is very laid back. Still a little skittish when being reached for, but more often than not, she’ll let you hold her until you’re done and she’ll act like she enjoys it. I think she’s going to be a chunky girl, but we’ll see. I envision her the size of Lady when she’s fully grown. Delta will sometimes join me on the bed, but usually for short periods of time.
Ruby Mae is a curiosity. She’ll resist being petted and handled right up until you touch her, then she begs for more. She’s growing and filling out, but she’s still the smallest of the four kittens.
Rossie concerns me the most. She’s growing into an attractive cat. She’s going to look a lot like her daddy, who has long legs and a long, lean body. Until this week, even though she had the run of the house, I could usually find her in the parlor. Two days ago, she started disappearing, and I suspect she’s found a hiding place somewhere in the house. She still comes down for meals, water, etc., but I don’t know where she’s hanging out. I don’t know if it’s best to just let her be and hope she’ll come around, or if we’re going to have a ghost cat for years to come here. She’s healthy. She’s an excellent house cat. She just shuns human attention. Kitty (~1979 – 1992) was sort of like that, and she turned out to be a very good kitty oh so many years ago.
The kittens are still up on the vet’s bulletin board as looking for a home, but I’m not worried about whether we get a call or not.
As for the outside ferals, I’ve seen Sneaky and Peaches playing across the street. The food is disappearing, but I haven’t seen anyone eating it. I have no idea where Little Orange is, but I imagine she’s around somewhere. The daddy cat lives kitty corner across the street, and that seems to be his home and his people. He’s very comfortable when the people walk around him. I’ve never seen him bothering the feral food here, so he’s also polite. I’ve made no progress in trapping Sneaky — I haven’t tried. I fear she may have a litter of kittens, but I have no way of knowing yet. Or, maybe not since I only see her with Peaches, and he’s not going to be making any kittens. But the daddy cat is very viable, so I don’t harbor any illusions that they wouldn’t get together when the time is right.
