Tech Stuff: What Are You Looking Foward To?
I’m at a loss for what to talk about here. I’m not seeing anything of particular interest in the tech market at the moment. The cell phone ads are somewhat amusing — at least the ones targeting iPhone. I have no regrets for getting an iPhone, but I’m in the demographic that advertisers don’t care about. Too bad. I have a little disposable income. I find it amusing so many of them want to blow me off.
My Mac Mini is a late 2008 model. I’ve upgraded it as much as possible, but there are now software apps I want to get that it won’t run, the processor is just a little too slow, and the memory bogs down. I’ve decided to get the latest version of the Mac Mini for Christmas. I’ll get the top of the line processor and whatever memory comes standard. I’ll buy the max amount of memory on the secondary market and change it out myself. My 750G hard drive upgrade in this Mini is more than adequate, so the 1G that comes with the new model should be fine — or if the standard drive is larger, that’s fine, too.
I have a Samsung SyncMaster 170MP monitor from mid-2002. It’s still going strong (fingers crossed), but I’d like to get a little more screen real estate. I think I can fit a 24″ monitor on my desk, so I’m looking into what might be available in the dimensions I can handle. I love Samsung TVs and monitors, so I’ll be looking into what they have to offer.
My iPad2 is still fine. It has just under 20G of space available on it, so I don’t think I’m going to need to update it too awfully soon (darn, because that Retina screen is gorgeous). My late 2010 MacBook Air is doing fine, also. I think I’ll consider a 13″ next time an update is due, but I want to get at least 5 years out of this before I consider that. That would mean late 2015 at the earliest.
I’m not looking for anything else in my iPhone5 either, so no worries about upgrading it when the new ones are announced. Sure, I’ll probably want some of the features, but I’m locked in for two years (November 2014) on this one, so I’ll like it just fine until at last then.
Lincoln wants me to update the navigation software in my truck for another $200. We’ll probably do Mr. L’s truck this year and alternate years on the trucks. I’m not wild about that update cost. That’s why we didn’t want the navigation systems in the truck, but they have been shoved onto us as standard. Mr. L’s laptop and GPS and $40 Street Atlas software works just fine — usually better for us — than a proprietary, expensive, factory installed system.
What tech stuff are you anticipating? What am I missing? I know I’m not wild about the new Windows OS. Unfortunately, Mac OS X is becoming more iOS-like, too, so there’s much to be disturbed about in the operating systems of the future.
