Cats: Lady and Reconcile
Lady is a couple of days away from finishing her first month on Reconcile (kitty Prozac). She seems generally calmer with the other cats. We let her out of her cage in the morning, give her medication, and she has free run of the house until later in the evening when we tuck her in again. If she gets into a significant altercation with Rossie, she’ll go back into the cage for the rest of the day, and we try again the next day. Her altercations with the other cats are nearly non-existent (emphasis on nearly). The goal, of course is for her to be able to stay out of the cage all the time (she likes to sleep with us at night), and to eventually wean her off the Reconcile, but we have a little ways to go yet. Her interaction with Rossie, and Rossie’s reaction to Lady will be key in how long that will be (as well as Lady’s continued tolerance of the medication with no ill side effects).
The interesting thing about this is what we’ve noticed about Rossie in the last week. Even if she gets into an altercation with Lady, she is less reclusive than she has been until now. She does not retreat under her dresser. She has taken to sitting under the ice cream table at the top of the stairs in the upstairs hallway. If she’s not there, I can usually find her under a chair in the den. If she’s been involved in a discussion with Lady, she retreats under the wooden step stool that sits low to the ground, but as soon as I enter the room to see what’s happening, Rossie crawls out from under the step stool and stays out. She’s still not interested in having me approach her, but she seems to know I’m trying to keep Lady away from her.
I heard running feet this morning (but no screaming from Rossie). I walked upstairs to investigate, but by the time I got to the den, Lady was squaring off to walk around Delta and leave the room, and Rossie was crawling out from under the step stool. Nobody seemed particularly interested in tattling on anyone else. Is this just a coincidence, or could Lady and Rossie be reaching some kind of an agreement to co-exist? It’s too early to tell.
Daphne’s coat is darkening, as maturing Siamese tend to do.
Natasha, Delta, Ruby, Tarzan, Ajax, and Floyd are all doing well. Nothing remarkable this week.
Sneaky has been particularly affectionate this week. I was able to get within three to four feet of Mooch to take some pictures of him today — Sneaky helped with that.
Just dropping by through the A to Z Challenge. Sounds like to have a crazy household of cats. Sounds Great. 🙂
Thank you. Never a dull moment here!
I think cats (and dogs) like to establish a pecking order, but it sounds like you’re handling it well. Good luck!
Thank you. We’re doing the best we can to provide a healthy, happy home for this group. Pecking orders are very normal. Bullying can’t be accepted.
