Cats: Divided Again
I’ve returned to Central Texas with “my half” of the kitties. Ajax, Rossie, Ruby, and Daphne seem to do well with Mr. L, so when we’re between houses, they stay with him. I take Lady, Natasha, Tarzan, Floyd, and Delta with me, because, either they prefer me or they cause problems of some kind for Mr. L. Mr. L believes Rossie will emerge from under the chair in the bedroom around Thursday. Usually, this is just in time for me to return with everyone, but this time, I won’t return to San Antonio until the 15th, so she’ll have a few days of relative “freedom.” We both hope she begins to like it well enough that she’ll insist on participating in being out and about among us.
Once again, Ruby is much more relaxed and very approachable in San Antonio. She’s out and about in Central Texas, but she’s not approachable. The only difference I can discern (besides the beloved garden window in the kitchen in San Antonio) is the San Antonio house is much smaller, so they feel more secure down there. It’s not just Ruby. The cats generally get along better down there.
When I got down there last Monday, I released each cat one by one from its carrier, administering the July dose of Revolution to each one. After I finished with everyone, I got down on the floor to talk to Rossie, who had taken up residence underneath the rocking chair in the bedroom — her sanctuary of choice. She hissed at me, but I talked to her for a few minutes and told her I was going to reach in and pet her. I gave her a few minutes to adjust (they’re all jumpy after three hours in the truck), and she didn’t complain when I reached in to stroke her. It didn’t take her long to present her chin for rubbing. She likes to be petted, but it’s tough to notice with how she acts sometimes. I hadn’t touched her for several months, but I noticed she’d gained just enough weight. I had planned on leaving Lady out of the cage overnight, but if Rossie is eating more with Lady tucked in for the night, that’s a good thing. Rossie had been on the thin side, so I decided to keep the routine of tucking Lady in at night to ensure Rossie can continue to move about unencumbered for the overnight hours. Lady doesn’t mind going into the cage — between eight and nine at night, I get a treat, and she follows me to the cage and walks in to get her treat. I close the door behind her, and she goes to sleep.
Lady helped me mow the back yard on Thursday. Everyone else preferred to take their turn in the garden window.
