Cats: Rossie and Ruby
I’m going to focus today’s update on Rossie and Ruby, our most elusive kitties. I’ve noticed a change in behavior in Ruby since Floyd’s been gone. I’m not certain if it’s related to Floyd or just a coincidence. Ruby has been more approachable. She and Delta bookend my legs at night (keeping them warm at least). I can sometimes pet her when she’s under the ice cream table at the top of the stairs. When she’s on the bed, she welcomes being petted.
Rossie and Mr. L are doing well. Rossie still has no interest in me. Concerned Rossie wasn’t getting downstairs to eat enough, Mr. L has begun bringing her bowls of food, and she’s eating more. As she’s gaining a healthy amount of weight, she seems to be developing a touch more assertiveness. Tarzan has been bullying her, but Friday, Rossie just stared him down, and with a verbal support from Mr. L, Tarzan left her alone.
Lady and Daphne will still bully Rossie at night, so they are both spending nights in the cage for household peace during sleeping hours. While this has not helped Rossie be more mobile, Mr. L’s sleep isn’t interrupted. They have the run of the house during the day and early evening.
With the heat being on in the house, Natasha is spending more time on the register vents soaking up warmth. Ajax had a trip to the vet this week due to some ongoing regurgitation issues, but he got a clean bill of health (several cats do this, so it isn’t just him).
I reconfigured the outdoor feeder so it drops three servings of food twice a day. With Sneaky, Walter, and Boomer all eating from the feeder, I want to make sure they get enough to eat with winter coming on. Sneaky gets a can of Fancy Feast several times a week, too.
Nobody seems to be using it, but I pulled the old towels out of the doghouse to wash and replaced them with a folded queen size mattress pad and two pillows I plan to put in the trash. I figured they might fill the space in the doghouse a little better and help any kitty taking refuge in there retain body heat. I sprinkled some cat nip in there as an enticement.
The cats are as ready for winter as they can be.
I love how you love your cats and enjoy them so much. It gives a person another view about cats in general. I have two of my own, indoor cats and we love them dearly. They are family and have such personalities and communicate in such fun and interesting ways. I really enjoy your sort of wild cats–it is interesting to read about them.
We would dearly love for our “indoor ferals” to be more relaxed and participate in the family more. They are a different kind of pet, that’s for sure.
