Tech Stuff: Apple…Yawn
I’m not sure where I should go for this month’s Tech Stuff. On the 14th, Apple announced updated operating systems at WWDC16 — their worldwide developer conference. I wasn’t able to tune in live, but I watched the video the next night. Well, most of the video. I don’t think I watched to the end. If I did, I fell asleep. The audience was polite, but I detected little enthusiasm from either the presenters or the audience. Some of what was announced might have interested 12-year-olds, but that may be insulting to 12-year-olds.
OS X is now…Mac OS. Siri and Universal Clipboard. Yawn. IOS10 is coming. More emojis and strange stuff in Messaging that I cannot imagine is going to be useful. And, for IOS, if I don’t update to it, I’ll have a persistent red circle on my settings app icon designed to drive me bonkers until I give in and update. I may be able to avoid the MacOS update for a considerable amount of time, but I’ll have to cave on that eventually.
They started with the best — Watch OS3, which looks like it will provide value. I still don’t see a need to purchase an Apple Watch. If you’ve been on the fence about this device, I’d suggest the next hardware update will be the time to spring for it.
It may not be a bad thing the Apple platform has reached a stagnant place. But, I’m not sure it’s a great thing, either. Time will tell. Is anyone hot on their tail? Microsoft sure isn’t.
