Cats and Dog: Living Together
Bill Murray made a version of “Dogs and cats; living together” famous in the movie “Ghostbusters.” Jase has been settling in. He and Lady are the most interactive. He barks at her asking her to play with him. She hisses at him and chases him into a corner. Great fun.
Tarzan, Ajax, and Daphne are the only other cats who have dared venture into the kitchen when Jase in in her. Tarzan tends to sit on top of the baby gate trying to determine if he really wants to enter the fray.
The other cats sniff him while he’s in the cage. Mr. L put a dirt and sand mixture into a litter box, and he loves to sleep in the dirt. You can see him sprawled out here with Rossie relaxing on top of the cage (yes, she’s still out and about, even with the pup in the house). No water bowl is safe in the cage with Jase in there, too. Next week, we plan to cut a scrap of carpet to fit the cage bottom and remove the box of dirt (it was intended as a place for him to relieve himself if he had to go overnight, but he’s not using it that way — we’re fine with that).
Jase is very much a puppy, but so far, he’s nearly a model puppy. He’s nearly doubled in size over the last couple weeks. He’s become more active, and he’s looking for activity. This is going to be my challenge. We’ve started walking around the big block in the morning, and we’re working on walking nicely on a leash and other manners during that time.
He’s doing very well at letting us know when he needs to go outside. At first, he would just sit by the back door. He’s started to add a little whine in, and I think he’s adding other clues into his repertoire. We’re getting better and reading his needs.
Monday, he goes in for his second set of puppy shots. I’ll bring a stool sample to check to make sure we got rid of all his parasites. He’ll be approximately 11 weeks old then.
