Hazards of Purchased Mailing Lists

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on September 17, 2018 by JeanSeptember 17, 2018

I received an odd piece of mail on Saturday. It closed with, “due to anticipated customer response, I encourage you to call 1-877-XYZ-XYZX or log on at www.xyz.com* to schedule an appointment prior to the expiration of your qualification status on September 30, 2018.” First, I wondered “Why would I want to come to Missouri (return address on the envelope) to buy a vehicle from you? I’m in Central Texas.” Then I saw a word in their logo and toward the end of the letter when they gave their company name that I thought was a town (it was).

I considered calling them, but I realized the only thing I would have to say to them would amount to a critique of their letter. I decided not to call. But maybe someone else can learn from these people’s mistakes. Yes. Mistakes, because there are more than one.

Ultimately, I believe they purchased a mailing list of addresses within at least a 60 mile radius of their business. That’s fine. I get that. They are a small town car dealership, and they depend on pulling in business from out of town. No problem. I’m not sure what other criteria they used.

Here’s where they made one goof. I am not in their stated demographic — “people with a timely payment history on their vehicle.”  They headed their letter “LOAN TERMINATION PROGRAM READ BEFORE MAKING ANOTHER PAYMENT.” I’m going to guess they are assuming everyone has a car payment.

I haven’t had a car payment since last century. I had a brief loan on my 1999 Mercury Mountaineer that I paid off early.  Since that time, I’ve paid cash for 4 vehicles. So, their opening line “According to our records, the timely payment history on your vehicles qualifies you to terminate your loan early.” did not inspire me to want to do business with them (because their “records” are quite faulty).

The envelope had a return address of a PO Box in a small town of Missouri, yet the business appears to be in a small town southwest of Waco, Texas. I’m not exactly sure, because they didn’t provide an address in their letter. It took me several steps to determine if it was a legitimate business (return address different from the probable location based upon the name of the business, and I still had to look up the suspected name of the town on the map to see they were close enough to me to possibly be interested in my business).

An internet search revealed such a business exists. I guess if I call the number for an appointment or set up an appointment on the website, I could get the address. They don’t want me to just drop in. On the other hand, if they are going to ask me to drive at least 60 miles to visit them, I guess they would want to make sure they are there to talk to me. I’m also going to guess since this is a tiny town, driving through on the main drag is likely to reveal their location, so maybe an address isn’t really necessary.

If I were to call them, if we still were having a conversation after I critiqued their letter, I’m quite certain they don’t want to hear that Ford/Lincoln lost my business when they a) took the V-8 out of the SUV line, and b) put the auto engine shutdown “feature” in the F-150 for 2018. I was pretty sure I was going with Toyota, but that sealed the deal.

We had that “feature” in a rental vehicle in Seattle. It’s not confidence-inspiring when you vehicle rolls back on a hill when you’re stopped at a light because you automatic transmission in “D” is not engaged because the engine is shut down because you’re stopped in traffic. (If I’m driving a stick, I know to expect this, and it’s not an issue.)

I suppose they recognize these hazards and know the mailing list they purchase isn’t going to hit their target customer every time. This letter was targeted for a VERY specific audience, and I’m not in that audience. If you’re going to be VERY specific in your sales letter, please make sure you get a VERY well-curated mailing list.

* I edited this from all Xs, because I received a takedown notice from Google when this post autoposted to G+ for posting sexually explicit material. I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about. Then I noticed my x’s, meant to anonymize a url got converted to a URL which must have gone to a real porn site I didn’t anticipate and certainly didn’t intend!

MKE: New Year; Smooth Sailing

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 4, 2018 by JeanDecember 30, 2017

With the Master Key Experience tools, I don’t need to do New Year’s Resolutions, but I do take the refreshing of the year to do some Big Picture Planning to make sure my life is on track for where I want it to be going. I’m not the same person who welcomed 2017, and I’m willing to suggest those of you reading here have changed too.

For me, my Young Living business assumed a larger role, so I added it to my DMP. Additionally, I began to realize I’ve largely achieved a level of Freedom and Autonomy I’m comfortable with, and I felt called to look for a different PPN (Personal Pivotal Need). After much contempation and several “sits” and consulting with my Mastermind Partner, I decided Legacy will join True Health as my two primary PPNs for 2018.

I was uncomfortable with Legacy, because that sounds like some huge world-impacting thing (like peace in the Middle East or something like that), and I don’t see that for myself, but “being the change I’d like to see in the world” is something I can manifest.

I continue personal, professional, and spiritual development. Achieving harmony with Mr. L is an ongoing process, but I’m seeing real improvement. The cats are thriving. I’m feeling like I might want to write again, but it’s still not a big priority. I have a lot of travel lined up for 2018, and Mr. L wants to do the Hershey trip without me (as long as I’m comfortable he can do it safely, I’m thrilled, because I don’t care for the trip, and his health and stamina is improving consistently). There’s a story to go with that. The day before he told me he wanted to do the trip without me, I’d thought how I didn’t want to go — see the power of thought? Of course, I’ve added the thought that he makes the trip of his dreams with full stamina and safety for everyone involved.

I’ll be using personal, professional, and spiritual development to not only achieve True Health but also to “be the change I’d like to see in the world.” Please note, I have a long way to go before I achieve either of those, so understand you won’t always see the desired manifestation of that. I am a work in progress.

Merry Christmas 2017

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 25, 2017 by JeanDecember 25, 2017
sea lions, eagle, buoy, and rainbow

I wish each of you a Merry Christmas. I pray these wishes find you healthy, happy, and prosperous. If not, I pray you find all three in the coming year.

Now that my two knee replacmements and the cracked patella appear to be fully healed, I’ve recently begun taking a beginner yoga class. I’m not sure if it’s using the Raindrop oils on my feet or the yoga practice, but my right hip is moving much more freely. I’d started using the Raindrop oils before I started the yoga, and I’d noticed an inexplicable improvement in my hip, but I believe it’s a combination of the two practices which is reaping the best benefit for me. I’ve taken four classes. I have a long way to go before I look like yoga is doing me any good, but I will tell you I can feel its positive effects already.

I prepared the next issue of the RandR Fiction Club newsletter this morning. It’s scheduled to go out on January 2. You still have time to get on the list two receive this quarterly missive. Click on the Writing, Books tab above, then look to the right sidebar to add your email and name to get on the list — make sure you check your inbox and click the verification link. That protects you from some clown signing you up without your permission.

For the first time in many years, we appear to have nine cats living in relative harmony. While Lady was in the cage to restrict her movement for healing purposes, the other eight cats had the run of the open areas of the house, and they all got along. Rossie has remained visible if not always approachable. Now that Lady’s foot has healed and she is released to interact as she wishes, everyone is still getting along. It’s been less than a week, so things could change, but Mr. L and I are hopeful. If this continues, we plan to disassemble the cage, freeing up a good bit of space in the parlor.

Sneaky still sequesters herself in the dining room. That’s because Ajax is a jerk and will not leave her in peace. Sneaky is a separate issue, and she’s content in the dining room as long as we spend time with her each day.

As I prepare for 2018, I’m doing personal and professional planning. I do this incrementally throughout the year, but I look at the big picture during the last half of December and the first half of January to make sure my life is on a desired trajectory. I keep a lot of plates spinning — spiritual growth, harmony with Mr. L, my health journey, relationships with family and friends, cats, property care, my essential oils business, and my writing (which has been on the back burner from a fiction perspective for a couple of years now, but I’m looking for ways to add it back in).

How I Won the Lottery

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 27, 2016 by JeanNovember 27, 2016

I’ve played the lottery a few times in my life. It’s intriguing, but, invariably, you spend your money and it’s gone. Some states claim “education” benefits, but I don’t see any direct connection, and, besides, I’ve become convinced the money spent on education doesn’t get spent in ways that directly benefit the kids people hope will benefit. I think it’s a ploy to help people feel better about not getting a return on their lottery expenditures.

In 1996, the Air Force, in their infinite wisdom, assigned me to New York City to teach ROTC. The corner store closest to my apartment carried lottery scratch off tickets. My personal favorite was the Bingo version. It took time to play and was kind of fun. Sometimes they would hit for a couple of dollars. I was easily spending $20 a week on these diversions. How did I win the lottery?

By playing an entirely different way. I was a prior service first lieutenant pinning on captain in late September of 1996. At that time, my plan was to fully fund my IRA (until then, I could only afford to partially fund due to mind-numbing debt acquired during my first marriage). I wasn’t fond of my assignment to NYC, but I used it to completely pay off debt, and I’ve never been in debt since, so I made lemonade out of lemons. When I made arrangements to fully fund my IRA, I did so by setting up a mutual fund devoted to that end. I also set up a small investment account in an aggressive growth fund where I deposited $100 a month (and I quit buying scratch offs — that’s where the money for that mutual fund came from).  I set this up to begin in January 1997.

Even the most math-challenged among you can easily calculate that $100 a month translates to $1200 a year. It’s been nearly 20 years. For the sake of argument, let’s say it has been 20 years, so I’ve deposited $24,000 into this account. The value in this account as of this weekend (still two months shy of 20 years) is $31,530.60. But wait. There’s more. Last year, I withdrew $18,500 from this account to purchase half a building. My husband, using his resources, purchased the other half of the building. If you follow the blog, that building is the detail shop.

Under certain conditions, USAA will allow members to establish mutual fund accounts with as little as $50. I’m sure they are not the only ones who permit this. Shop around. Look for a free seminar about investing from a non-biased individual. Many investment firms offer educational series to the public. I’ve heard USAA’s pitch, and it’s neutral. Did I win an actual lottery? Of course not. Have I benefitted financially from systematically saving to an aggressively postured mutual fund? You bet. Can you do it? I believe you can.

December Property Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 20, 2012 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

The bulk of this month’s work has been at the shop.  We’ve had some drainage issues, and one solution is to replace a single tube downspout with a double tube downspout, effectively doubling the volume of water which can be whisked off the roof of the building.  Here are some … Continue reading →

How Not To Query

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on August 26, 2012 by JeanAugust 26, 2012

I’m a writer.  If you’re a writer, you’re probably thinking “query” in the title refers to a writing query.  Not this time.  This is a business query, which writing queries are, too.  This one came to my husband and I from “THE premier central Texas ranch brokerage.”  We’re not particularly … Continue reading →

Bulk Items Are Good

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 26, 2011 by JeanOctober 26, 2011

We’re gradually putting stuff we deem as trash in the shop out by the curb for the trash guys to pick up.  I don’t know what their limit is, but they do request only one bulk item a week.  We got the initial 70 contractor bags of trash all pieced … Continue reading →

E-Books vs Paper

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 19, 2010 by JeanJune 14, 2019

There’s a lot of discussion about e-Books and pricing.  I think I understand the author and publisher view.  I understand e-Books aren’t necessarily cheaper to produce than paper books, although the costs are different. The New Yorker has an interesting article this morning asking if the iPad will topple the … Continue reading →

Done With Hershey

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 9, 2009 by JeanOctober 9, 2009
