An Unexpected, Perplexing Amazon Oddity

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on July 17, 2017 by JeanJuly 17, 2017
necklace and earrings

A little over a week ago, I received a package from Amazon. There’s nothing unusual about receiving a package from Amazon, but in this case, the return address wasn’t specifically from Amazon. It arrived in a white padded envelope. From the outside, it wasn’t obvious the package was from Amazon, but I recieve many packages from Amazon via third party vendors. I didn’t think much of this until I opened the package and discovered….this:

necklace and earringsUuuuuummmm. I would have remembered ordering this. Was it some kind of “gift” for placing an order with another company? I checked. No.

A small slip of paper was also inside the envelope with Amazon.com and a large barcode on it. There’s an Amazon Remit to: address. A vendor return section with what appears to be information related to the item. A Shipped from address and a shipping address (my home address). Apparently, it’s an Amazon vendor doing an overstock return. My husband and I both immediately understand how this item could easily be an overstock. What we can’t understand is how my name and home address came out as the shipping address for this item.

Since I didn’t order it, I have no way of contacting Amazon to figure out what to do about it. Amazon does a lot of things very well, but providing a way to contact them about things like this is not one of them. I just hope my home has not become the dumping ground address for stuff like this.

Feeling: Amused

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 24, 2017 by JeanMarch 24, 2017

I’m sharing a good chuckle I got after opening a piece of junk mail today. Discover is apparently branching out into the personal loan arena. For those of you who have a Discover card, I’m sorry. I suppose I should be thrilled to receive their “Invitation ID Card,” but I can only laugh.

They start out by complimenting me on my on-time payment record and overall credit history. So far, so good.  Then they go on to say I could use their preferred invitation to change my higher-interest credit card balances to PAID IN FULL…

There’s only one problem. I don’t have credit card balances, and my highest credit card rate is almost one-third lower than their 24.99% rate. The fine print does mention the rate would be between 6.99% (equal to or lower than my current rates) and 24.99%, but I’m not interested in dealing with these people.

And, of course, I don’t have a balance to transfer to them anyway, so it’s not worth my time. Crunch box.

The Darnedest Places

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on September 14, 2009 by JeanSeptember 14, 2009

Sometimes things turn up in the darnedest places.  Late last fall, I purchased a fancy digital voice recorder in anticipation of perhaps dictating into it and allowing voice recognition software to translate my eloquent mutterings drivel into text.

I haven’t had much chance to use it, but part of the reason is I misplaced it earlier this year.  I had it, then it was gone, and I couldn’t remember where I put it.  Did I take it with me when I went to my grandmother’s funeral?  If I did, did I lose it at my parents house (no–I checked when I was there in May and the whole house was packed up and moved)?  Did I lose it on the plane? Did I leave it at home?  Which home did I leave it at?  I’d searched two houses and my truck to no avail.  That’s the problem with something smaller than a Snickers bar.  It’s easy to tuck somewhere and lose it.  I was pricing it on line in case I wanted to replace it, and for the current cost, I found myself asking, “Did I really pay that much for it?  Yipes.”

I’d described it to hubby, and he said, “I think I’ve seen that on the mantel.”  So I put my concerns aside until I could get back up to Central Texas to check the mantels (there are four of them in this house).

I came back up today.  But first I had to take our winter jackets to the cleaners in preparation for taking them with us on The Great Northeastern Adventure that we’re embarking on soon, because sometimes it gets cold in the Northeast in the fall.  Of course, you want to empty your pockets before you take your things to the dry cleaners.

Guess what I found?  Yep.  Safely tucked in the inside pocket of my coat.

My Zoo and Twilight

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on June 6, 2009 by JeanJune 6, 2009

A few days ago, I discovered the My Zoo application on Facebook, and I’ve been building Inuit’s Place ever since.  I’m having a blast.

I also resumed work on Twilight as of last night.  It’s been languishing in a shopping bag too long.  I pulled it out and went back to work.  The catalyst?  MarFisk inviting me into Writing Only chat.  I figured if I was going to be in Writing Only, I’d better be writing.

It had to be serendipitous, because shortly after Mar lured me in, she had to leave, but her mission was accomplished, and I got my tail in gear on writing.

Flow Charts

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 17, 2008 by JeanFebruary 4, 2017

Leave it to xkcd to point out the futility or the brilliance of using the object being taught to present the lesson.  What do you think?  Does this make it easier for you to use a flow chart, or did you really have to know how to use it to … Continue reading →

Wireless DSL at the Kitchen Table

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 1, 2008 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

Got the DSL connection working, and hubby and I are wirelessly accessing the Web on our laptops from the kitchen table.  Tres cool. And, Tech, I’m a little concerned about the tone of that last comment.  If I didn’t know better, I’d say that sounded like a threat….oh.  It was … Continue reading →

And that was just for today. Monica captured a great letter to a product manager in her blog meanderings. If you’re a woman, I can’t imagine you not being able to relate to the letter. If you’re a man, well, you’ll probably recognize some signs. It’s a been a busy … Continue reading →

Odds and Tendons

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 22, 2007 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

I had the six month follow-up on my knee today. It’s ok, but I’m not satisfied with it. The doctor says it’s about where he expects it to be. I asked to go back in June. The left knee took about ten months before it became mostly pain-free. I figure … Continue reading →

This and That

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 12, 2006 by JeanMarch 12, 2006

Despite the toaster burning my bagel yesterday morning, I did manage to overcome the disappointment. Hershey managed to choke it down. I managed to mow the front yard and wash the truck. I met my neighbor across the street. Not bad, I’ve only lived here since last June. It’s a … Continue reading →
