Twenty Months

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 22, 2024 by JeanApril 20, 2025

Twenty months into this unwelcome transition, I’m still feeling unsettled with a roller coaster of emotions I can’t identify half the time. Things are happening, though.

Friends invited me to travel to Shreveport, and they taught me to play a few casino table games. We had an enjoyable couple of days.

I’m helping other friends close their antique store, which is a sad event, but they are looking forward to having more time to enjoy life, and I support them wholeheartedly in that endeavor. They need everything out of the building by the end of the month, so this next week will be hectic.

The painting of the house is nearly complete. Once they no longer need the lift to paint, they can complete the roof installation. The two bathrooms at the back of the house are next.

The two windows on this corner need to be rebuilt, so painting is delayed until that can happen.

A few renovation projects are underway in the new building I purchased. I had them remove a few walls, add a new wall, and move some doors around. Carpet has been removed in preparation for epoxying the floor. Bathrooms have been renovated, and in one case, two half baths have been combined into a full bath–well, a shower, so maybe that’s only a three-quarter bath.

What’s Next?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 28, 2024 by JeanApril 28, 2024

What’s the focus for the next year?

I’ll keep working on renovating the house — I installed a new post and mailbox today. The old post rotted out. I have three sets of sturdy steps. The leak into the downstairs bathroom appears to be halted. On Monday, we’ll pull scaffolding out of the garage and get it set up behind the garage. The team will begin repairing the mistake of the contractor who built the garage in 2008. They installed the tongue and groove boards upside down on two walls. The guys will start at the top, remove each board, prime it, and reinstall it the proper way.

I’m still working on the shop to prepare for selling off unwanted items.

I’m also planning several motorcycle tours. I’ve been lamenting not being able to travel with Alan, but I bought a touring motorcycle, so I may as well tour on it.

I also plan to begin working on my fiction again.

These things should keep me busy and engaged for the foreseeable future.

Four and A Half Months

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on September 3, 2023 by JeanSeptember 4, 2023

I was traveling at the four-month mark. Then I had some tasks to complete. So here we are. I’m attempting to slow my sprint while not coming to a complete halt. I FEEL as if I’m not getting enough done. I FEEL as if I’m falling behind and will not continue to make progress. In reality, estate tasks are getting done. Day-to-day household tasks tend to slip.

I closed on the sale of the ranch last week. I’m still seeking a buyer for the 4th St property. I have a trailer load or two of items to remove from the property and cleaning to complete. To move the lantern sale forward, I need to come up with a price to give my buyer, and we need to agree on it.

I wanted to figure out how to close out the estate myself, but I’ve had to admit I don’t know how to do it without risking making important mistakes, so I will be scheduling time with a tax and financial adviser to make sure I get it right.

I enjoyed my 45th high school reunion in Ohio. I enjoyed seeing classmates and spending time with them as well as a few other friends. Alan readily agreed to come on this trip when I got the date, so I was sad to not have him with me physically. Of course, he’s always with me in my heart.

I added a day to the trip to spend time with a friend from another class. I think it had been twenty years since we’d seen each other last, so that visit was long overdue. Another friend was unable to attend the reunion, so we met for lunch. Always a good visit with her. Some of our class met for the season opener football game. That was fun.

My high school biology teacher had lost his wife of 52 years a year and a half ago, and we each understood where the other was coming from, so I’m grateful I reached out to him while I was there. Besides, it was his birthday, so we needed to celebrate. Through the years, we have kept in touch. While we hadn’t seen each other for way too long, our friendship extended beyond high school, so it wasn’t as if we hadn’t been in touch for the last 45 years.

I had lunch with mutual friends of Alan and mine on the way back to Texas. I was able to catch up with a lot of people important to me on this trip, and I’m grateful for it.

One other thing I was able to accomplish was shifting Alan’s email from his primary mindspring account to his backup account. I’ve wanted to close the mindspring account for several years. I was notified while traveling that my pre-pay was up, and I needed to renew or I’d be paying on the month-to-month rate. That was my incentive to complete this housekeeping task. I will be closing that account next week after 25 years as a customer of that company.

Grand Tour: Week 4

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on June 23, 2017 by JeanJune 23, 2017
Walter on the porch

Week 4 was a leisurely part of the trip. We rode the California Zephyr from Reno to Chicago. Once in Chicago, we rented a car and drove to Wisconsin to spend a few days with my mom and dad. They are doing well. Our visit with them was probably the best part of our trip. All too soon, we had to head back to Chicago, turn in the car, and climb on the Texas Eagle for the trip home. Rockdale, TX Depot

Soon after we were underway, we learned our trip was not to be without adventure. Thankfully, we were able to ride the train the whole way, but due to track work, passengers between Longview, TX and Taylor, TX had to detrain in Longview and pick up a bus. We got to ride the “alternate” route which took us within 15 miles of our Central Texas home. Shhh. Don’t tell anyone, but Mr. L said he hoped we’d take that route, thus speaking it into existence.

We arrived in San Antonio three hours late, caught a cab to the house, and gratefully sank into bed. The next morning, I assessed the grass growth for the month and decided it could wait if it had to. Thankfully, it did not rain as forecast, so I mowed the lawn. We met friends for dinner and drove back to Central Texas on Memorial Day, arriving in time to talk to both Walter and Zelda outside. The game camera revealed they had both been regular visitors all month. I was particularly relieved, because we hadn’t seen Walter for a month before we left. Walter on the porch

On Tuesday morning, I picked up the indoor herd from boarding at our veterinarian’s office and brought them home. Then I mowed the lawn. Vacation was definitely over.

A-10 Thunderbolt

I’ve been putting off writing this post. Week 3 begins with the Greyhound portion of the trip. It was supposed to be the Coast Starlight, so we went from riding Amtrak’s flagship train route to…Greyhound. Yes there are worse ways to have to travel, but… Greyhound says they have comfortable … Continue reading →

Mendenhall Glacier

Week 2 is all about my cruise to Alaska. Mr. L doesn’t cruise, so he planned an antiquing trip to towns surrounding Seattle. He was largely disappointed with the results of his trip, but I know he wouldn’t have enjoyed the cruise. I traveled on Princess Cruise Lines on the … Continue reading →

We Have Returned…

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 30, 2017 by JeanMay 30, 2017

Kind of like MacArthur. Or not. Four-week vacations are not for the faint of heart. Or anyone with a heart, but we’re back. Yes, I only obliquely mentioned we were leaving. I did that on purpose. Now that we’re back, I’ll build four more posts to cover what we did … Continue reading →

Fresh Start

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 1, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

I’m looking for a fresh start for my web presence. For a long time, I reserved several domain names, tried to blog in different areas for different interests, but I’ve been feeling drawn to consolidating my interests in one area. It’s not quite as bad as you may think. I … Continue reading →
