Cats: The Door and the Dog
I have forgotten so many things about raising a puppy. When Jase first arrived, he always came when called. Now? Not so much. He’s getting better about “giving kisses” instead of grabbing with his mouth. He’s good about sitting at the door when he wants to go out, and he’s communicating well when his need is more urgent (no accidents in the house after the first week or so). He’s usually better about not pulling on the leash (but it still needs a little work). We’re still working on not jumping up, and how on earth do you teach them not to sit there and bark at you because they want attention? Those are annoyances, but the most recent challenge is a doozy.
He goes bonkers when the doorbell rings. He thinks he absolutely has to go outside and greet the person at the door, and he will not back off or take no for an answer. The mail lady left a package yesterday morning, and I could not keep him in the house while I stepped onto the porch to bring it in. If he’d have gone onto the porch with me and come in when I came in, that would have been fine, but he disappeared. I finally found him under the truck eating something I probably don’t want to know about (thankfully, not a cat). Eventually, he barked at the back door (and not too long), but that doesn’t change the fact he ignored me calling him.
The FedEx guy dropped something off yesterday afternoon and rang the doorbell. Jase went bonkers. Fortunately, I was able to stuff him in his crate before I went to the door. This little guy is strong. I’m going to have to figure this one out soon.
