Merry Christmas 2017

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 25, 2017 by JeanDecember 25, 2017
sea lions, eagle, buoy, and rainbow

I wish each of you a Merry Christmas. I pray these wishes find you healthy, happy, and prosperous. If not, I pray you find all three in the coming year.

Now that my two knee replacmements and the cracked patella appear to be fully healed, I’ve recently begun taking a beginner yoga class. I’m not sure if it’s using the Raindrop oils on my feet or the yoga practice, but my right hip is moving much more freely. I’d started using the Raindrop oils before I started the yoga, and I’d noticed an inexplicable improvement in my hip, but I believe it’s a combination of the two practices which is reaping the best benefit for me. I’ve taken four classes. I have a long way to go before I look like yoga is doing me any good, but I will tell you I can feel its positive effects already.

I prepared the next issue of the RandR Fiction Club newsletter this morning. It’s scheduled to go out on January 2. You still have time to get on the list two receive this quarterly missive. Click on the Writing, Books tab above, then look to the right sidebar to add your email and name to get on the list — make sure you check your inbox and click the verification link. That protects you from some clown signing you up without your permission.

For the first time in many years, we appear to have nine cats living in relative harmony. While Lady was in the cage to restrict her movement for healing purposes, the other eight cats had the run of the open areas of the house, and they all got along. Rossie has remained visible if not always approachable. Now that Lady’s foot has healed and she is released to interact as she wishes, everyone is still getting along. It’s been less than a week, so things could change, but Mr. L and I are hopeful. If this continues, we plan to disassemble the cage, freeing up a good bit of space in the parlor.

Sneaky still sequesters herself in the dining room. That’s because Ajax is a jerk and will not leave her in peace. Sneaky is a separate issue, and she’s content in the dining room as long as we spend time with her each day.

As I prepare for 2018, I’m doing personal and professional planning. I do this incrementally throughout the year, but I look at the big picture during the last half of December and the first half of January to make sure my life is on a desired trajectory. I keep a lot of plates spinning — spiritual growth, harmony with Mr. L, my health journey, relationships with family and friends, cats, property care, my essential oils business, and my writing (which has been on the back burner from a fiction perspective for a couple of years now, but I’m looking for ways to add it back in).

Cats: Walter

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 28, 2016 by JeanMay 28, 2016
Walter

I’ve been pleased to see Walter hanging out on the porch more lately. Of all the current outdoor cats, Walter is my favorite. His coloring is gorgeous, his expression is angelic, and he has the potential to be such a sweetheart kitty. He’s also the only outdoor kitty I’ve captured, gotten tested, neutered, and vaccinated, so he’s earned his food. Everyone else, at this point, is a moocher. I try to take Walter a can or two of Fancy Feast when I see him on the porch, and he seems to want to be petted as much as he wants to eat. He’s still not quite sure how to accept the petting graciously. I have to watch him carefully for the deadly “paw swipe.” He isn’t malicious about it, but it can pack quite a sting. This morning, I was able to apply a dose of Revolution to his neck, and he remained unphased. I’m sure it will help his comfort level, because I think I saw what looked like a flea on him last week.

Cats: Quiet on the Porch

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 30, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

All’s quiet on the side porch with Sneaky inside and Junior not here to entertain us with his antics anymore. When I pull the game camera chip, where I would have over a thousand photos before, I have only a couple hundred now. The porch is much quieter with just Boomer and Walter (and the opossum) eating from the feeder. A long haired black with white underbelly kitty showed up briefly. We have some infrequent visitors from time to time. Most of them seem to stop in for a drink, which is perfectly acceptable.

I was able to reduce the setting on the feeder to release half a cup with each drop instead of the cup or more I was using before. I don’t want food in the feeder overnight, because I don’t want to feed the opossum and the raccoon. I’m okay with them getting water.

Sneaky is in the house and mostly miserable. She escaped to outdoors a couple of days ago, and the difference in her was clear. She loved being outdoors. She is depressed indoors. Part of that is getting acquainted with and dealing with the other cats. She’s accustomed to being the Queen of All She Surveys, and inside, so far, she isn’t. I’d be depressed, too. I think she’s made her peace with Daphne. Ajax and her are working things out now, and we’re keeping Lady at bay, but she’s watching. That introduction will come in time. Once those three work things out, I believe Sneaky will be able to move around with more ease.

When we’re in San Antonio, Lady loves spending time in the back yard. I can tell I’m going to need to let Sneaky out a couple of times a week here to satisfy her need for fresh air. Her joy at being outside is palpable. She runs around refreshing her scent on everything.

I’ve released Sapphire to the parlor and kitchen for the last couple of days. Yesterday, she escaped the cage before I could catch her for her mandatory cuddling session, and the day before, Mr. L didn’t know to catch her before letting her out, so after two days with no cuddling, she was testy about such things. I caught her this morning, and she’s snuggled into my shirt while I type this, playing ostrich (I’m not here. I’m not here. I’m not here.) Her reward for snuggling will be free time during the day in the parlor and kitchen. Thankfully, she’s been using that time to play and be out in the open. I’m grateful she’s not spending her time hiding.

Rossie prefers to be out, and after I’m convinced she and Lady (and, to a lesser extent, Ajax) have things worked out, I’d love to give Rossie the run of the house. My concern is she will retreat to under the dresser upstairs, and we’ll never see her again. For now, she comes out, moves around the parlor, and spends time in the rocking chair where we are free to talk to her and pet her. Lady has attempted to breach that citadel and has been rebuffed numerous times, so Rossie’s confidence is good. We want to keep that. At this point, I think putting Rossie in the cage at night prevents Lady from attacking her, and Rossie feels safer, which allows her to be more relaxed during the day. This, we want. We want a confident Rossie. The process is slow, but we’re seeing that development.

Kitties are healthy. We’re happy about that.

Added later. Maybe Sneaky is getting more relaxed:

Junior: RIP January 22, 2016

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 22, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

I’ve written about Junior numerous times. He’s been a delightful feral cat whose game camera antics are well-documented. He seemed healthy and happy if more skittish than he needed to be. I caught him this morning and took him in to be checked out and neutered if he was healthy. Unfortunately, he was FIV positive. If he could be made into an indoor cat, this wouldn’t have to be a death sentence. Unfortunately, Junior was an outdoor feral we were working with, so he wasn’t a candidate for indoor life. The safest option for other neighborhood cats was to have him put down. Ultimately, this was the most humane choice for Junior, too.

Here’s the last photo captured of Junior this morning (that wasn’t his backside) by the Cat Cam. He will be missed.

junior

Most of the photos captured of Junior were on the game camera, so the post above is very common. Cat Cam photos will be a little less interesting without him.

Cats: Sapphire

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 16, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

Sapphire is the feral kitten I trapped several months ago. She’s going in to be spayed at the end of the month. By my calculations, she’s 7 months old, but Dr. Val’s best guess puts her at six months old. We’re each willing to accept the other’s best guess, because … Continue reading →

Fresh Start

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 1, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

I’m looking for a fresh start for my web presence. For a long time, I reserved several domain names, tried to blog in different areas for different interests, but I’ve been feeling drawn to consolidating my interests in one area. It’s not quite as bad as you may think. I … Continue reading →

Photo: Outside Cat Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 7, 2015 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Boomer (cat)

The outside cats have been giving me some good camera shots. Let’s see if I can find any to share. Walter is still a gorgeous, majestic kitty. Sneaky is confident. This is her territory, and she makes sure others know it as needed. Boomer has been visiting regularly: And Junior … Continue reading →

Cats: Happy to Be Home

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 17, 2015 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

Stephen said the cats texted him when we got home. Most of the cats are happy to be here. Daphne even slept with me the first night we were home, and she rarely does that. Lady was grouchy for the first few hours we were home, then she settled down … Continue reading →

Cats: The Resort Edition

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 3, 2015 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

The cats are spending time at their resort. I assigned roommates. Sneaky is the odd cat out, but she hasn’t had an opportunity to demonstrate who she gets along with. At the beginning of their stay, they are roomed as follows: Lady and Daphne; Rossie and Sapphire; Ajax and Ruby;  … Continue reading →

Cats: Here and There

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on September 26, 2015 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

All the kitties are well. Lady is happy as long as she can sit or lay on a chair near us. Sapphire is growing like a weed, very playful, but she has little or no interest in letting us pick her up. She does watch out interaction with the other … Continue reading →
