Cats: Walter Update (Yes, Again!)

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 22, 2018 by JeanDecember 21, 2018
Walter

On Wednesday, I took the carrier over to my neighbor’s back yard and coaxed Walter out of his hiding place. He complained loudly all the way home. I put him in the bathroom with Rossie and Daisy. He complained loudly for a long time. I sat with him until he calmed down. He tried to get on the window and kept slipping off. I moved what was left of the old cat tower into the bathroom, and it sits just high enoug for him to sit on top of it and look out the window.

Whenever he sees or hears me, he is quite vocal. As far as I can tell, he’s had no serious altercations with Rossie or Daisy. I’ve observed him eating, drinking, and using the litter box. He’s vocal when I come into the room, but when I cuddle him, he quiets right down and purrs. In related news, I had an opportunity to pick Daisy up today, so I released her back into the house. Being in the room did not result in her being more sociable, which was my rationale for putting her in there. Daisy gets along with all the other cats and has no problems in the general population except she doesn’t like me. She and Mr. L sometimes reach an accord where he can pet her.

Since taking Rossie for her annual exam, she’s been letting me pet her (after the obligatory hissing). For now, Rossie and Walter are in the room together. Neither one likes confrontation, so it’s possible they may not interact, but I’ll be observing how things go for both of them. Rossie has been drawn to the boys, so she may be interested in seeing how receptive Walter is to her. I want to give Walter at least 4 weeks to acclimate to being in the house. When he sees me walking Jase outside, he’s vocalizing at the window — loud enough to hear out by the street.

When we brought Sneaky into the house, she vocalized at the window for a little while, too. To my knowledge, Walter has been an outside cat all his life with little or no inside time (I’ve had him inside at least three or four times for an overnight stay in the crate). This is a big adjustment for him.  After he demonstrates he’s adjusted to being in the house, I plan to introduce, one at a time, Daphne, Ajax, Lady, and Tarzan (not necessarily in that order) to him one on one by bringing them into the bathroom for supervised introductions. How that goes will affect my next steps.

For now, Walter is home, safe, and adjusting to a big change in his life.

Cats: Not Fans of Jase

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on July 14, 2018 by JeanJuly 14, 2018
Jase, 5 1/2 months

I’m in San Antonio with Jase and five cats. None of the cats are happy with big, goofy, heavy-pawed Jase. He still hasn’t figured out that a paw slamming down in excitement could be deadly for kitties. The kitties aren’t shy about letting him know their displeasure.

Lady is the most tolerant. Tarzan was on the bed this morning fuzzed up and hissing. Jase has adopted a “shark approach” where he gllides by sideways, thus minimizing the discomfort from claws.

Sneaky and Delta manage to avoid him completely, and Daphne growls whenever he’s near. I figure as long as Jase isn’t in a position to do Daphne any harm, it’s karma for Daphne’s obnoxious actions with some of the other cats.

I monitor interactions carefully, because not only do I not want anybody to get hurt, I do want Jase to learn to be gentle with the cats.

In other news, Jase is getting better at not barking at every movement he notices out the front door.

Cats: Upheaval, Stability, and Sadness

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on June 30, 2018 by JeanJune 30, 2018
Walter, Socks, Scooter (3 cats)

Half the inside cats and Jase are coming to San Antonio with me for the month of July. I am on call for jury duty, so we’re not exactly sure what adventure awaits us. I could have hours and hours of mind-numbing waiting (I’ll have plenty to do), or I could have quite a bit to keep me busy. No idea until the adventure begins on Sunday evening when I call in for reporting instructions. The plan is to bring Sneaky, Tarzan, Lady, Delta, and Daphne with me and Jase.

The outside foursome is geling. I can’t say they’re snuggly, but they all are doing well. I can find them on or near the side porch most of the time. Scooter is taking his can on the porch with the rest of the boys. Zelda usually takes hers on a patio block on the ground. I was easily able to administer this month’s Revolution dose to all three boys. Zelda remains the holdout. She can rub ankles, but I can’t get near her long enough to administer a dose of Revolution.

Socks was checking out a little orange kitten a couple nights ago in the front yard. It went back across the street where there were at least two orange tabby babies. This morning, I saw a buzzard pecking at something in the school parking lot. Jase and I got close enough to see it was one of the kittens, so that was sad to see.

Life on the streets is hard. I try to make life better for as many as I can, and I know each of my four outside sweethearts are at risk.

Cats: 14 + 1 Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on June 9, 2018 by JeanJune 6, 2018
Zelda

For the Plus 1, Jase is off to summer camp for a week and a half. The inside cats are relieved, the outside cats will be missing their curious creature they monitor movements for.

Ajax: Ajax is somewhat curious about Jase, but he doesn’t appreciate Jase jumping on him (nor do I).

Lady: Lady is getting a lot of exercise jumping over baby gates. Despite this, she’s the other of only two inside cats interested in interacting with Jase. Usually she’s swiping at him as he’s barking at her. He thinks it’s great fun. We’re trying to teach him to be nicer to her, but we’re not sure how.

Tarzan: Tarzan wants nothing to do with Jase and is perfectly willing to tell Jase that.

Sneaky: Sneaky sometimes watches Jase from the dining room window and talks to him. Mostly, she minds her own business. She thoroughly enjoys being held and petted in the recliner.

Delta: Delta is doing well. She prefers her attention late in the evening or early in the morning.

Ruby: Ruby’s attitude remains unchanged. If she’s on the bed, she might let you pet her. Or she might slip over the side of the bed and disappear underneath. Any other place in the house is off-limits for interaction.

Rossie: Since Jase’s arrival, Rossie has become more elusive; however, I see her out and about at odd times, so she’s doing well.

Zelda: Zelda is still a puzzle, but she’s in a one step forward, one and a half steps back mode for socialization. She’ll rub my ankles and actually allow me to stroke my hand down her back to her tail, then the next day she looks at me as if I’m going to eat her. Even so, I’m amazed at the progress. I thought I might be able to apply a dose of Revolution to her neck this month. Nope.

Walter: Walter cannot get enough of Jase. When Jase comes out for a walk in the evening, Walter is right there watching. He has allowed Jase to sniff him a time or two, but Jase just can’t seem to control his excitement at meeting Walter, and, well, Walter wisely steps out of the way when a nearly 40 pound puppy gets excited.

Daphne: Daphne wants nothing to do with Jase. She likes to be petted in the morning, either in the window sill at the top of the stairs, or she will come into the bedroom and allow me to pet her, or she will wait near the stairs to be petted when I descend for the day.

Sapphire: Sapphire is her usual skittish self. She’s nearby but isn’t interested in being petted or handled. There was a period of a few months where she allowed it, but we’re back to, “Maybe I’ll deign to sniff your fingers, but you had better be as far away as possible when I do.”

Scooter: Scooter appears to be doing well, but he has been very reluctant to be anywhere near us since the trapping incident. He’s still nervous about eating canned food (the bait I used in the trap), and while he’s relaxing on the side porch in the morning, when I come around the corner of the house to bring them their cans, he’s disappearing under the house to wait on the ductwork, where he may or may not come out to eat his can while I’m within sight.

Gray Socks Ghost: Gray Socks Ghost is very skinny. I’m trying to slip him extra food to see if he’ll gain some weight. He’s allowing me to pet him both before and during feeding. This is reminiscent of when Walter was beginning to be socialized, so I have hopes he will come around.

Daisy: Daisy is clearly Sapphire’s sister and Zelda’s daughter. She, like Sapphire, is around but will not permit handling (if I can ever catch her, she doesn’t seem to mind being held and petted for a little bit, though). She won’t even sniff fingers, though.

Each one of these critters has their own personality and quirks. Each one is a blessing, even though I’m saddened that so few are interested in human interaction.

Cats: Daphne

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 21, 2018 by JeanApril 17, 2018

Daphne would probably rather not have a dog in the house. She goes out of her way to avoid Jase. Other than that, she’s doing great. I shared a post on Facebook from a couple years ago where I stated I was pretty sure Daphne thought her name was, “Get … Continue reading →

Zelda and Daisy

Sapphire and Daisy are two kitties who don’t get a lot of mentions here. These two are gorgeous, sweet kitties who are contact averse. They are half-sisters. Zelda is their mama. Both cats can be found near us in some way — they are interested in what we are doing, … Continue reading →

Jase (8.5 weeks)

The cats are getting adjusted to Jase — most of them. Someone is not happy, and I have not determined who. I am taking steps to address the unhappiness. When Jase arrived, I moved the food tower to the entry hall and added a water tower there. There are three … Continue reading →

Cats and Dog: Living Together

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 31, 2018 by JeanMarch 31, 2018
Jase (8-week-old shepherd/lab puppy)

Bill Murray made a version of “Dogs and cats; living together” famous in the movie “Ghostbusters.” Jase has been settling in. He and Lady are the most interactive. He barks at her asking her to play with him. She hisses at him and chases him into a corner. Great fun. … Continue reading →

Jase (8.5 weeks)

Our lives were turned upside down a week ago, and we’ve recovered just barely enough to talk about it. The humans brought something our size, furry, and obnoxious home. They moved our food and water towers into the entry hall, but left our litter boxes in the kitchen (there are … Continue reading →

Rossie

Rossie’s cage has been down for a little over a week, and I’m pleased to report she’s still doing very well. She’s limiting her movements to downstairs (as far as I can tell), but I’m happy about that. She has a plethora of defensible positions down here to fend off … Continue reading →
