Cats: Earning Their Keep

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 11, 2017 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Zelda

Walter was outside when we were on the way to breakfast this morning, so I detoured to pet him. He was still here when we got back, so he got to gobble down three cans of food. When he was here the day before yesterday, I noticed he’d been in an altercation. Today, the two areas I’d noticed had festered and begun the healing process. Walter was paying them no mind and didn’t appear bothered when I investigated them, so for now, I’ll let him and his immune system deal with it.

While I was talking to Walter, I noticed some entrails and a tail just under the edge of the side porch steps. Somebody, probably Zelda, has been earning their keep. The tail was too big for a mouse, so this was likely a young rat. Honestly? Would you mess with this cat?ZeldaIf she were a dog, Zelda would be a junkyard dog. I’ve seen her with Daisy, though, and under that tough exterior, there’s a sweet, playful kitty.

In studying game camera photos from yesterday, it’s feasible Walter may be taking my suggestion to spend more time at home to heart. Here he is on the porch with Nick yesterday afternoon. Yes, he’s slinking around, but at least he’s there.
Nick and Walter

Sneaky, our former feral who moved into the house a year ago, is doing well. Here she is after a snuggling session sitting on the back of my chair. She’d just finished checking my hair for things that should not be there (I guess that’s what she was doing), which always makes me nervous. Sometimes, when she does this, out of the blue, she’ll attack my head then run away. Thankfully, that didn’t happen today.

After Natasha and her biting ways, I’ve learned that behavior is a symptom of overstimulation and I don’t pay it much mind — except to watch for the warning signs that are always there if I’m paying attention. There’s a limited window where one can back away and still remain unscathed. I managed to do so today.

Natasha, 2001 – April 22, 2015

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 1, 2015 by JeanMarch 30, 2016
Natasha

NatashaNatasha has always been my special kitty. The photo above was an early photo after she settled into the house when it was just her, me, and Hershey (she ignored Hershey, and Hershey, wisely, paid her no mind) in Alabama. I found her on Petfinder in 2005. She’d been in foster care for two years, and they estimated she was about two years old when they found her. She had a minor deformity in her left eye where her third eyelid stuck. It required periodic treatment, but mostly it didn’t affect her.

I passed the pre-adoption questionnaires. Her foster mommy, Wendy, insisted upon driving up and seeing where Natasha would be living. We talked on the living room floor as Natasha explored. Somehow, I must have passed, because I was quoted an adoption fee, and I paid it. Wendy warned me that Natasha would be sitting quietly on a lap seeming to enjoy being petted, then she would nip and run. Wendy said she’d display a restlessness before this happened. It wasn’t easy to explain, but I knew exactly what she meant when Natasha did it to me. This was why Natasha was not supposed to be around kids or other animals. I complied with the kids part.

I think Natasha didn’t realize she was a cat, and she didn’t like being lumped in with the other cats. But she became very comfortable around the house and relaxed easily. She finally accepted Mr. L in February, 2010.Natasha

Natasha and I bonded well. She spent a lot of her time near me, frequently sleeping on top of me. She usually purred. I’ll miss that.

A couple of months ago, I placed this warm heating pad I’d just finished using on top of her. She didn’t stir. (I think she liked the heat.)IMG_2069

Not long ago, I was tickled to watch Ruby (our second most reclusive indoor feral) curl up behind Natasha in this imitative fashion.Natasha and Ruby

I’d made provisions for Natasha to stay with me in the dining room when I returned from the hospital after my knee surgery, because I know she didn’t like being separated from me. Here’s where we were practicing before I went to the hospital. We were ready.
NatashaThe morning after my surgery, Mr. L called to say Natasha was having trouble and wanted to know when the clinic opened. I told him they opened at 8 and would be open by the time he could get there. I don’t know what happened, but his next call was at 11:03 am to tell me she was gone.

The first thing I did was compose a brief note on Facebook to Natasha’s foster mommy. Natasha was one of her success stories, and I loved being able to update Wendy about Natasha’s progress. This was a less pleasant task, but Wendy needed to know.

I was cushioned from the blow by being in the hospital. Now, I’m home and there’s still a hollow space where Natasha should be near by.

Cats. Anything New?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 28, 2015 by JeanApril 1, 2016

Is anything new? Maybe. I’ve detected one, maybe two different cats on the game camera. One cat is decidedly different, but it has markings similar to Daphne’s. The other cat may be Boomer, but I can’t really tell. Boomer had a large head and shoulders, and this cat doesn’t seem to have that. It’s not Walter, but it looks similar to both of them. I’ll have to study more film and more live cats to sort this one out. I attribute the guests to the colder weather. Perhaps Sneaky invited her homeless friends to stay with her during the cold snap?

Mr. L has suspended feeding Rossie upstairs. The plan is to force her to come downstairs to eat. We’ll see how this goes. I caught a glimpse of her downstairs earlier this week but when she knew I’d seen her, she disappeared. I don’t know what I did that has resulted in Rossie not liking me, but she clearly dislikes me.

Lady and Daphne have been surprisingly good about hanging around by the cage when it’s time to go to bed at night, and both have been moderately compliant about going in for the night willingly. Yes, they get treats for going inside.

Natasha has been hugging registers — her normal winter behavior. Delta has allowed herself to be petted downstairs — with some reservations.  Ruby remains approachable upstairs on the ice cream chair but not really anywhere else. Rossie is a ghost. Ajax is vocally demanding attention. Tarzan hid under the covers when the heating and air conditioning guy came this week. He’s notoriously shy around people he doesn’t know.

I’ve seen Walter and Sneaky outside. I think I’ve seen Boomer, but something doesn’t look quite right, so it’s entirely possible it’s another cat. But he had responded when we say, “Hi, Boomer.” (by looking at us), so we’re not quite sure what’s happening. This cat, if it’s Boomer, has been looking in the window and having exchanges with Lady and Tarzan.

I pulled today’s photos. I’m pretty certain I am seeing Boomer, and this behavior fits what I’ve seen from him. In fact, here’s a sequence I never expected to see:

If there’s any doubt about whether the cats know the camera is there or not, I think this clears it up. The cats provide hours of entertainment and speculation.

Cats: Yes, They Are All Still Here

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 24, 2015 by JeanApril 1, 2016
Boomer

The cats have had a quiet week. To our knowledge, Lady was not responsible for any altercations. However, Tarzan and Rossie had an under the ice cream table discussion in the hall outside the bedroom at 4am this morning. Needless to say, Mr. L was not amused.

For some reason, earlier this week, I woke up to Natasha nipping me. Quick hit and run nips.  Apparently, I was sleeping too late. (And I was, she got me up about five minutes before the latest I like to sleep, so did she really know?)

With the chilly weather, my personal heated “Brick”, Delta, has been keeping my feet warm at night.

Mr. L found Rossie, Ruby, and Ajax sleeping in a big pile this morning. I’m pleased to know Rossie and Ruby are interacting more with the other cats.

Sneaky is still interested in what’s going on inside the house, and so, apparently, are Boomer and Walter.  I caught them peeking into the house on game camera shots.

Boomer

Here, we have Boomer looking into the house as he eats.

Here, we have Walter looking into the house.  Maybe someday, their curiosity will allow them to trust us more than they do now, and we’ll get a chance to interact with them in person.

Walter

At least Sneaky is still interested enough play with us.

Cats: Vacation Blues

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 18, 2014 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Fourth Kitty

We’re back from vacation.  I picked most of the cats up this morning.  Dr. Val called me last night with an update on their status.  When I dropped them off, I asked them to check Delta and Floyd for urinary tract infections, and I had a couple of concerns with … Continue reading →

What’s New?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 11, 2011 by JeanJanuary 8, 2021

What’s new? I’ve blogged about WordPress, the iPad, and pizza lately.  I don’t know about you, but those are all topics I enjoy, but what else has been going on in my day-to-day world? I’m concerned about the on-going political battle in the United States.  I’m not in favor of … Continue reading →

Been Wondering Where I Am?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on July 1, 2010 by JeanJune 14, 2019

Me, too.  Well, I know where I am.  I’m in the Central Texas location.  I guess the question should have been, “Whatcha doin?”  That’s was we always say Ajax is asking Natasha when he approaches her.  I know what I haven’t been doing. I haven’t been writing. I haven’t been … Continue reading →

Reflecting on 2009

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 30, 2009 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

2009 has been an interesting year.  It’s my first full year of retirement.  There’s still no time for boredom. We experienced some sadness.  My paternal grandmother died in February — complications of old age.  She was my favorite grandmother when I was younger — she was a kid’s grandmother.  She … Continue reading →

Feline Firsts

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on August 22, 2008 by JeanApril 20, 2025

Yes, I am amazed. For the first time, we have all three felines in the garden window at the same time, and nobody is fussing:   As you can tell, the lines of demarcation are getting a little closer together. If you can’t guess, Natasha is on the right side. … Continue reading →

Moved

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 13, 2008 by JeanFebruary 11, 2016

The move is technically complete. Everything came off the truck on Monday looking just like it did when it when it was loaded on Friday. I had decent packers, conscientious and capable loaders, and a vigilant, professional driver. Natasha is grumpy, but I’ve placed her crate with the top open … Continue reading →
