Cats: Four on A Tower

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 1, 2017 by JeanApril 1, 2017
Daisy

Other than our sad news about Nick earlier in the week, the cats’ lives have been quiet. At one time this week, we had four cats lounging on the tower at the same time. I think that’s a first. Rossie was in the bottom “bunk.” Lady was in the middle “bunk.” Daphne was in the top perch — of course, Daphne understands better than any of them the concept of taking the high ground. Mr. L wanted to rearrange the towel on top of the trunk, so he deposited Ajax in the next lower perch to bring the cat count to four on the tower. Too bad I didn’t get a photo.

During the day, Rossie, Lady, and Ajax are in the parlor/kitchen. Daphne and Delta transition in and out as we go in and out the door. Sneaky spends all her time in the dining room/downstairs bathroom, even though the door is open and she is free to roam the entry hall and upstairs. She chooses not to. Daphne, Tarzan, Delta, Sapphire, and even Ruby wander in and out of the dining room snacking on Sneaky’s food. Daphne sometimes gets confrontational with Sneaky. Mostly everyone ignores Sneaky, and that’s the way she likes it. Every couple of weeks, Lady and Rossie have a screaming match, but Rossie is much better at repelling Lady than she used to be, so we have hope. Unfortunately, Lady just won’t let it drop.

In the outside world, Daisy remains standoffish. She will eat right near me, but if I reach for her, she immediately backs away and hesitates to come back. Zelda won’t eat the canned food while I’m there but quickly comes to the bowl if I step away. Both will sit 3-4 feet away from me but neither are interested in me getting closer to them. This will be a challenge when I catch Daisy for her spay appointment tomorrow. If I’m unsuccessful in catching her tomorrow, I suspect I will have to try trapping her on Monday morning. If that doesn’t work, I’ll have to postpone her surgery.  According to the game camera, Walter has been visiting regularly. I just haven’t seen him in person.

RIP: Nick – 2016-2017

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 28, 2017 by JeanMarch 28, 2017
Nick

This morning the risk with outside cats became a reality for our household. As near as I can pinpoint it, an hour and a half ago, Nick was running across the street toward the house and got hit by a car. He was killed instantly.

At 9:40 this morning, Mr. L called to tell me he thought we lost Nick last night because there was a cat in the street in front of the house. Sure enough. It was Nick. Thankfully, he hadn’t been run over again yet, so I was able to gently load him into a plastic bag and carry him back to the house. He’s buried by the fence in front of the side yard pecan tree. This is one of the final photos the game camera captured of Nick and Daisy at about 8:45 this morning.

Daisy and Nick

Zelda and Daisy both watched respectfully while I took care of Nick’s burial. I’m going to miss his inquisitiveness. I believe he would have become quite a snuggle cat. He wanted to be petted but didn’t quite know how to let himself enjoy it. Now he won’t get that chance. Here he was last night on the porch.

In September 2016, when he first saw us looking out the side door window at him. He ran but came back to see:

Also in September when he first braved eating Fancy Feast when I was nearby.

Nick was always watching out for Zelda and Daisy. The devotion of the three of them to each other was a joy to observe. We’re going to miss this sweetheart of a cat.

Cats: Mother and Daughter

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 25, 2017 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Nick

A few days ago, I came upon Zelda and Daisy lounging on the side porch steps. Notice anything interesting?

Zelda and Daisy

Daisy has an appointment for spaying on April 3. She’s been taking after her mother and been reluctant to be handled, so I’m going to begin trying to catch her next Sunday morning to make sure I have the best chance of having her corraled for Monday morning’s trip to the clinic.

Nick will lean in toward being petted for a few seconds before realizing he’s not supposed to like it and backing out of the pet. Nick and Daisy

Here he is acting like pretending to be a cute kitty before he may or may not use his razor sharp claws to grab my hand. We’re still working on “No claws!”. He’s at the age where, if he were in an inside cat, he’d be attacking toes through the blankets at night.

Cats: Earning Their Keep

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 11, 2017 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Zelda

Walter was outside when we were on the way to breakfast this morning, so I detoured to pet him. He was still here when we got back, so he got to gobble down three cans of food. When he was here the day before yesterday, I noticed he’d been in an altercation. Today, the two areas I’d noticed had festered and begun the healing process. Walter was paying them no mind and didn’t appear bothered when I investigated them, so for now, I’ll let him and his immune system deal with it.

While I was talking to Walter, I noticed some entrails and a tail just under the edge of the side porch steps. Somebody, probably Zelda, has been earning their keep. The tail was too big for a mouse, so this was likely a young rat. Honestly? Would you mess with this cat?ZeldaIf she were a dog, Zelda would be a junkyard dog. I’ve seen her with Daisy, though, and under that tough exterior, there’s a sweet, playful kitty.

In studying game camera photos from yesterday, it’s feasible Walter may be taking my suggestion to spend more time at home to heart. Here he is on the porch with Nick yesterday afternoon. Yes, he’s slinking around, but at least he’s there.
Nick and Walter

Sneaky, our former feral who moved into the house a year ago, is doing well. Here she is after a snuggling session sitting on the back of my chair. She’d just finished checking my hair for things that should not be there (I guess that’s what she was doing), which always makes me nervous. Sometimes, when she does this, out of the blue, she’ll attack my head then run away. Thankfully, that didn’t happen today.

After Natasha and her biting ways, I’ve learned that behavior is a symptom of overstimulation and I don’t pay it much mind — except to watch for the warning signs that are always there if I’m paying attention. There’s a limited window where one can back away and still remain unscathed. I managed to do so today.

Cats: Surprise!

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 18, 2017 by JeanApril 20, 2025

I was watching Daisy eat a can of food, and Nick crept up behind her, surprising her. This is the three shot sequence the game camera caught of their exchange: Zelda was waiting for me to leave so she would eat.

Cats: In the Dog House

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 11, 2017 by JeanFebruary 11, 2017

I’ve had a dog house on the side porch in case the outside cats want shelter for a long time. I’d never been certain cats were using it until the game camera began showing Boomer entering and then exiting four hours later. I have a box and newspaper in there, … Continue reading →

Cats: Not Much Going On

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 5, 2017 by JeanFebruary 5, 2017

The cats’ lives have been mostly quiet lately, but you expect an update anyway, so here goes. Sneaky and Rossie accompanied me on a quick trip to San Antonio for a five minute HVAC installation inspection by the city on Friday. Sneaky was relaxed and enjoyed the trip. She played … Continue reading →

Cats: An Orange One?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 31, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023
Scooter

Just when I thought the outdoor cat situation was stabilized, a new kitty has appeared. He’s a gorgeous orange tabby. He looks well fed but not well-cared for, so I’m not sure what he will mean to our colony. He leaves if I approach him, so he’s not interested in … Continue reading →

Cats: No Tail is Safe

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 17, 2016 by JeanDecember 17, 2016
Nick, Zelda, Daisy

Daisy has reached that playful age where no tail is safe around her. She attacks Zelda’s and Nick’s tails with equal ferocity. Zelda has been observed playing with Daisy, and I’ve witnessed Nick and Daisy racing around on the steps chasing one another. I think this image captures a compelling … Continue reading →

Cats: Changes in the Fabric

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 3, 2016 by JeanDecember 2, 2016

It’s been a busy week for the Love Cats. First, the outside colony should be stable now.  Boomer, sadly, has been humanely euthanized for FIV, but the rest of the news is positive. Amazingly, I was able to easily trap Nick and Zelda on Monday. Both passed their FIV tests. … Continue reading →
