Cats: Scooter and Lady

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 4, 2019 by JeanMay 4, 2019
Jase and Scooter

Scooter and Lady don’t have much in common except for their attraction to Jase. Lady has been enamored with Jase ever since he showed up. She doesn’t put up with him being rude, and she is careful to take shelter under chairs or at eye level with Jase. That makes it easier for her to put Jase in his place when he forgets his manners, which is still too often. I’ll come downstairs in the morning, and she’ll be sitting outside his crate. She asks to come into the parlor and kitchen when she knows he’s out of his crate. She chooses to nap in places she knows Jase has access. I can only conclude that she likes him, clumsy oaf that he remains.

Scooter is an outside cat. He has been fascinated with Jase for several months. Jase kept lunging at him, which did not build trust with Scooter, but Scooter has been persistent, and Jase has been getting less lungy. Over the last couple of weeks, Scooter has been waiting for Jase on the porch when he comes out, and they’ve been sniffing. Jase has been quite gentle most of the time. As with Lady, Jase tends to get a little excitable, and Jase came in dripping blood after one encounter, so I know Scooter is prepared to defend himself and put Jase in his place, too.

Large dogs tend to mature slowly, and Jase is no different. At least we can see progress even if it isn’t as rapid as we would like. Impulse control is an ongoing effort, and him getting more relaxed with cats is part of it.

Cats: Outside Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 26, 2019 by JeanJanuary 26, 2019
Socks

What’s been happening with the outside cats? It’s winter, how are they holding up. All three are doing great.

Zelda’s Christmas present to me was allowing me to pet her. I think she was just as shocked as I was, and that hasn’t happened again. Zelda spends a lot of time on the back porch and under the back steps. She gets her morning can there, and I supplement with dry food later in the day, because Scooter has become ruler of the side porch where the automatic feeder and water tower are located. I added a small water tower on the back porch and I moved the doghouse to the back porch to provide shelter if Zelda is inclined to use it (so far, I don’t think she is — all the outside cats have good, cozy secret places to hole up, so I’m not surprised).

Gray Socks Ghost is also doing well. He was very thin back when he was captured and neutered, but he has filled out comfortably and looks very healthy. I pet both him and Scooter when they are eating their morning cans. I’m able to pet Socks at other times as well, and sometimes I’m even able to pick him up and hold him.

In some ways, I’m most surprised by Scooter. He’s gone from “scooting” away whenever we appear to being always under foot — to the point I’m concerned he’ll trip us and we’ll fall down the back steps. He’s also become the de facto ruler of the side porch. I think Socks is still able to get to the feeder and waterer, but Zelda has not appeared on camera for several months (which is why the separate provisions have been made for her at the back porch). Scooter loves to be petted, and he can sometimes be picked up and held as well. He still gets excited and will swipe with claws or, more rarely, teeth, so we’re still cautious with him. He does like to be “roughed up” a little, so we accommodate him there.

I’m quite pleased with how well Socks and Scooter have socialized since their neutering. Socks is more of a gentle soul, and Scooter is a rough, tough, snuggler. Orange tabbies have a reputation for being affectionate, and Scooter is living up to that reputation. Gray Socks Ghost’s namesake, Gray Socks, once I earned his trust was quite the sweetheart, and Gray Socks Ghost is turning out to be the same.

In a quick update, Walter has just started ignoring me when I walk into the bathroom. That tells me he’s settling into being a housecat quite comfortably. Rossie is tolerating him well. She’s leaning in to being petted, so I’m pleased with that, too.

Cats: Walter Has Disappeared

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 24, 2018 by JeanNovember 22, 2018
Walter

Walter stoppped showing up a week and a half ago. He does this periodically, but I do get concerned when he does. Today I checked the game camera. He last appeared on November 13 at 11:45 pm. He usually reappears around the first of the month for me to apply his Revolution, and I’m praying he does the same this month.

It seems Scooter has taken over the porch, and this affects access to water and dry food. Zelda hasn’t been on the side porch for a couple of months. I discovered this a couple of weeks ago and moved the doghouse to the back porch to provide her with shelter. I’d been feeding her wet food there, but I’ve started augmenting with dry food as well. I’ll be adding a water tower too. Even though Zelda hasn’t appeared on the game camera, I’ve seen her nearly every day on the back porch and been able to see that she’s healthy.

Walter disappears for a couple of weeks several times a year, so I’m prayerful he returns soon.

Cats: Outside Update

Socks

The outside boys are doing great. Scooter, Socks, and Walter are all eagerly waiting outside the back door for their morning can. They’ve become quite obnoxious about butting their heads against the can and making it difficult to fill their bowls. I’m working on getting them to back off until their bowl is filled. Walter is probably the most gorgeous cat I’ve ever seen, but Scooter and Socks are both handsome kitties, too.

Walter is still is sweet, cuddly, handsome self. He gets chased around by Socks and Scooter a lot. He still would almost rather be petted than eat.

WalterI gave Scooter his name because he always scooted when he saw us. Since I caught him and got him neutered, he’s been quite the sweetie. He still gets easily excited and nips or bats at us, but he is less lethal as he gets calmer. He loves ear rubs, and he’s amenable to petting as well.

Scooter loves ear rubsSince Mr. L brought the trailer back to the house, Socks thinks it’s his personal deck. Socks is also a sweet kitty since he’s been neutered. He and Scooter are always around (I’m happy for this.) I can sometimes pick Socks up when he’s in the yard. I’ve been able to hold him on lap and pet him. He does get excited, but he only swats with a paw with sheathed claws.

cat on the trailer deckZelda still won’t let us handle her, but she sure is right there for food.

This week has been a banner week for these two kitties. Gray Socks Ghost, with no food in sight, has begun walking under my hand when I hold it up and nudging it for petting. Scooter happily accepts petting with no food in sight as well. He gets a little … Continue reading →

Walter, Socks, Scooter (3 cats)

Not long ago, Scooter stayed on the side porch and was afraid to approach us. After we put his food down, he would approach the bowl and eat. He’s not the same cat. He now greets us at the back steps after the dog has gone in from his morning … Continue reading →

Scooter

The cats are here to say there’s really nothing new going on. Scooter is all for being petted while he’s eating, and sometimes he allows petting on the edge of the porch, but he’s still nervous about it. Socks allows petting while he’s eating but if he stops to think … Continue reading →

Walter, Socks, Scooter (3 cats)

Half the inside cats and Jase are coming to San Antonio with me for the month of July. I am on call for jury duty, so we’re not exactly sure what adventure awaits us. I could have hours and hours of mind-numbing waiting (I’ll have plenty to do), or I … Continue reading →

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on June 24, 2018 by JeanJune 24, 2018

While I was in Utah, Mr. L fed the outside cats. In the morning, Walter and Zelda are near or on the back porch waiting, and Gray Socks Ghost is halfway between the back porch and the side porch waiting. Scooter is either on the side porch or under the … Continue reading →
