Cats: Back Home After an Exciting Week in San Antonio

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on May 21, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

Yes, all nine cats made the trip for an exciting week in San Antonio. I doubt they will agree, but there you have it. Ajax is the only kitty who doesn’t travel well. He has so much trouble with traveling. I am tempted to board him when we have to go to San Antonio for an extended time. Everyone did well on this trip, and I’d like to think Sneaky and Ajax made a little progress on accepting one another as housemates.

I think Ajax is curious about her, but Sneaky interprets his curiosity as aggression, becoming defensive. Naturally, when she uses a strong offense as her defense, Ajax has to respond in kind. Ajax is aggressive by taking a position where he can stare at Sneaky, which is decidedly unfriendly on his part and especially rude in the cat world.

The outdoor cat feeder, tied down to plywood and held in place with bricks fared reasonably well. From game camera photos, it appears the opossum pulled the food tray away from the feeder. Fortunately, this feeder will continue to drop food with the tray disconnected, so everyone still got food to eat at programmed intervals. Our neighbors captured and rehomed one raccoon, but we still have one left. The remaining coon favors his left hind leg, but he’s plenty resourceful. He managed to move the whole apparatus and managed to dislodge two of the three bricks. Our next step is to use bricks with holes in them and insert long screws in the plywood to drop the bricks over, making it more difficult for the raccoon to move the bricks.

Determined Raccoon

The cat I call Tarzan’s uncle can see the contents but can’t reach them. He is quite perplexed.

Tarzan's Uncle

These animals are keeping us busy thinking up new devices to thwart their efforts. Does this count as dementia prevention?
