Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 22, 2024 by JeanNovember 22, 2024

I guess I’m entering the angry phase of grief. I don’t know any other way to explain my persistent grouchiness. (I suspect a touch of compassion fatigue as well.)

On a brighter note, the house is coming along. They are nearly finished with the roof and are putting color coat on the walls.

In a huge surprise, Zelda showed up on camera last week. I hurried home and gave her a can. She ate it, but I haven’t seen her again. Seeing her took my breath away. She’s alive! I wish she could tell me what she’s been doing for almost the last year. She looked very healthy. I guess she must have moved to someone else’s porch for a while. My neighbor and i would both love to have her come home.

I bought a building last week. Alan was in the process of buying a 1946 Sportsman when he died. I used the money he would have spent on the car to purchase the building. Some minor renovations are underway. I’ll talk more about it at a later date.

Zelda Lives!

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on March 16, 2020 by JeanMarch 16, 2020

You probably saw my last post about Zelda, and that we hadn’t seen her for several weeks and had finally concluded the worst. I am delighted to report we were WRONG.

Zelda is alive and well even if she is more avoidant than before. This makes my heart sing, and I hope it elevates your joy levels just a bit.

Go in Peace, Zelda

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 22, 2020 by JeanFebruary 19, 2020
Zelda

I have not seen Zelda for two months. My neighbor has not seen her for a month. Tuesday night my neighbor messaged me, “Unfortunately, I am beginning to believe Zelda ran out of lives. I am sad.” I am sad, too. Even though Zelda would not allow us to handle her, she was an important part of our lives. This photo captures her attitude, but it doesn’t capture her friendliness, which is hard to explain from a cat that won’t let you touch her. But she regularly came when called. Zelda

Zelda wanted her can of food. She wasn’t willing to be petted in exchange for it though. She was confident. She could provide for herself if she had to.

Three years ago, she allowed herself to be trapped and taken to Dr. Valeri, who checked her overall health, spayed her, and vaccinated her. When I tried to trap her the next year to get her shots updated, Zelda looked from the trap to me as if to say, “You must be out of your mind if you think I’ll get in there.” So, even though man’s law says rabies vaccination occur annually, Zelda’s law said, “I’ve been on my own this long. I’ll take my chances.”

Zelda was responsible for many, many kittens. My neighbor said she was having kittens under their shed when they still had their dog. Their dog has been gone for at least ten years. So Zelda was even older than I thought she was. A year ago, on Christmas Day, she allowed me to stroke her a few times. I have at least two of her kittens in the house — Sapphire and Daisy. Both of them have adopted their mama’s attitude about being handled and are very hand’s off cats. Like their mama, they want to be near us.

This morning, at the vet’s office, the tech deactivated her account, assuring me that if Zelda reappears, she can be reactivated again. This is my last picture of her — hunting in my neighbor’s yard in October 2019.  I do think Zelda enjoyed being retired from motherhood. Although, we thoroughly enjoyed watching her play with the surviving kittens from her final two litters — Nick and Daisy — on the side porch. They were a fun family, and Zelda played. The idyllic family came to an end when Nick got hit by a car a month shy of his first birthday, and shortly afterward, I brought Daisy inside after she got spayed. Zelda was on her own, and she didn’t mesh with Scooter or Grey Socks Ghost who showed up at the feeder when Zelda was the only cat. She spent more time under the back porch. When I noticed she hadn’t appeared on the game camera in over a month, I made sure she had a doghouse, a timed dispensing feeder, and a water tower on the back porch that she could get to for food, water, and shelter. She rarely used the shelter, but she did eat the food and drink the water. She received her daily can of food either on or under the back porch until she started spending more time across the street while I was in the hospital. My neighbor fed her the canned food, but I suspect Zelda’s time was near anyway. I’m sure we’ll both be hoping against hope that Zelda will reappear, talking to us and waiting for her daily can at a distance just out of our reach. But if she doesn’t, Zelda was a community cat who was well-loved and is deeply missed. Go in Peace, Dear One.

Cats: Outside Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on January 26, 2019 by JeanJanuary 26, 2019
Socks

What’s been happening with the outside cats? It’s winter, how are they holding up. All three are doing great.

Zelda’s Christmas present to me was allowing me to pet her. I think she was just as shocked as I was, and that hasn’t happened again. Zelda spends a lot of time on the back porch and under the back steps. She gets her morning can there, and I supplement with dry food later in the day, because Scooter has become ruler of the side porch where the automatic feeder and water tower are located. I added a small water tower on the back porch and I moved the doghouse to the back porch to provide shelter if Zelda is inclined to use it (so far, I don’t think she is — all the outside cats have good, cozy secret places to hole up, so I’m not surprised).

Gray Socks Ghost is also doing well. He was very thin back when he was captured and neutered, but he has filled out comfortably and looks very healthy. I pet both him and Scooter when they are eating their morning cans. I’m able to pet Socks at other times as well, and sometimes I’m even able to pick him up and hold him.

In some ways, I’m most surprised by Scooter. He’s gone from “scooting” away whenever we appear to being always under foot — to the point I’m concerned he’ll trip us and we’ll fall down the back steps. He’s also become the de facto ruler of the side porch. I think Socks is still able to get to the feeder and waterer, but Zelda has not appeared on camera for several months (which is why the separate provisions have been made for her at the back porch). Scooter loves to be petted, and he can sometimes be picked up and held as well. He still gets excited and will swipe with claws or, more rarely, teeth, so we’re still cautious with him. He does like to be “roughed up” a little, so we accommodate him there.

I’m quite pleased with how well Socks and Scooter have socialized since their neutering. Socks is more of a gentle soul, and Scooter is a rough, tough, snuggler. Orange tabbies have a reputation for being affectionate, and Scooter is living up to that reputation. Gray Socks Ghost’s namesake, Gray Socks, once I earned his trust was quite the sweetheart, and Gray Socks Ghost is turning out to be the same.

In a quick update, Walter has just started ignoring me when I walk into the bathroom. That tells me he’s settling into being a housecat quite comfortably. Rossie is tolerating him well. She’s leaning in to being petted, so I’m pleased with that, too.

Cats: Walter Has Disappeared

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 24, 2018 by JeanNovember 22, 2018
Walter

Walter stoppped showing up a week and a half ago. He does this periodically, but I do get concerned when he does. Today I checked the game camera. He last appeared on November 13 at 11:45 pm. He usually reappears around the first of the month for me to apply … Continue reading →

Cats: Outside Update

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 10, 2018 by JeanNovember 9, 2018
Socks

The outside boys are doing great. Scooter, Socks, and Walter are all eagerly waiting outside the back door for their morning can. They’ve become quite obnoxious about butting their heads against the can and making it difficult to fill their bowls. I’m working on getting them to back off until … Continue reading →

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on October 27, 2018 by JeanOctober 26, 2018

We got home after our annual Pennsylvania trip last Sunday. We hadn’t been in the driveway more than a few minutes before we saw Zelda dashing into the yard to greet us. Keep in mind that Zelda will not let us touch her. But she comes running when we get … Continue reading →

Cats: Scooter — Night and Day Difference

Walter, Socks, Scooter (3 cats)

Not long ago, Scooter stayed on the side porch and was afraid to approach us. After we put his food down, he would approach the bowl and eat. He’s not the same cat. He now greets us at the back steps after the dog has gone in from his morning … Continue reading →

Cats: Just Another Mundane Caturday

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on August 4, 2018 by JeanAugust 3, 2018
Scooter

The cats are here to say there’s really nothing new going on. Scooter is all for being petted while he’s eating, and sometimes he allows petting on the edge of the porch, but he’s still nervous about it. Socks allows petting while he’s eating but if he stops to think … Continue reading →

Cats: July Heat

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on July 21, 2018 by JeanJuly 21, 2018

The outside cats know how to stay out of the heat, but they are ready and eagerly waiting for their can of food each morning. Zelda, Socks, Walter, and Scooter are all clamoring for their cans. Sometimes I give Zelda her can first on the back porch steps then call … Continue reading →
