Libraries
Ahhh. Mostly due to the Internet, I have not set foot in a library since 1996. Until today. The last library I was in was the Air University Library on Maxwell Air Force Base. Today, I returned. I needed a video (yes, they have a good video collection available for check out–as well as an immense array of books, magazines, and newspapers). In less than ten minutes, I had my new library card, been directed to my video, checked it out, and was back in my office. All without stepping more than fifteen feet from the circulation desk (well except for my office–it’s about 100 yards from the circulation desk). Have I mentioned how wonderful librarians are? They are gods.
On Tuesday, our office is making a trip to Andersonville National Historic Site in Andersonville, Georgia. Yes, for work we get field trips. I so love this job. I needed the movie “Andersonville” to plan a session with a few co-workers to focus our trip on leadership. We will prepare something and we’ll all watch the movie while we ride over on the bus.
Tomorrow, we do the ROPES course as a team-building exercise. Next Thursday, I’ve heard something about a pot-luck pool party for the office members and familes. I’ve heard the work hard-play hard theme espoused before, but I think I’m seeing it in action here. If so, I can’t wait.
And I *haunt* my library. Though in the past year the relationship has changed to using it as a pick-up and drop-off for interlibrary loans! My small town library isn’t very big, but they try.
From the summit of Mount Olympus, I say “Thank you”.
Librarianship is similar to writing in that you have to do it for the love. There sure ain’t no money.
Have a great trip!
