I’ll bet most of you don’t know there are standards for lighting as a result of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I didn’t know until we visited one of hubby’s subscribers and lantern manufacturer W. T. Kirkman in May. Woody very graciously showed us through his business facility as well as his personal collection. We met his family and had a lovely dinner, talking kerosene lanterns the entire time.
I learned a lot of things on the tour, but one of the most interesting was lighting hanging on a wall beneath the height of a doorway can only extend from the wall a maximum distance. Since Woody imports or manufactures kerosene and vintage lighting, I was fascinated to see lighting designed to meet ADA criteria.
As you can see, this particular lamp is designed to direct light downward as well as throughout the room. In every way, it looks like an ordinary lamp, but it hugs the wall.
As an interesting side note, look for W.T. Kirkman’s creations in the upcoming movie, “The Lone Ranger or as you’re touring any of the Disney properties.
That’s interesting. No, I didn’t know that. A friend of mine who is remodeling an older building is having to change the restroom in a major way to accommodate ADA. The requirements are about to break her bank. But it has to be done.
I just visited the website. The lanterns made for the movies are cool! I’d like to have one.
We have 700-1000 lanterns here at the house, but none made for the movies.
Wow. I didn’t know you had that many. Is that going to be featured in your museum?
Yes, they will.
Wow those are so interesting. I would love to have a kerosene lamp light. 🙂
