Cats: Changes in the Fabric

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on December 3, 2016 by JeanDecember 2, 2016

It’s been a busy week for the Love Cats. First, the outside colony should be stable now.  Boomer, sadly, has been humanely euthanized for FIV, but the rest of the news is positive. Amazingly, I was able to easily trap Nick and Zelda on Monday. Both passed their FIV tests. Nick was neutered and vaccinated on Monday and was able to be home to babysit Daisy. I believe Monday and Tuesday nights were the first time either of them had been without mama (Zelda), so I think they were a little nervous. Nick is the most serious kitten I’ve ever met, and he met his big brother responsibilities head on, doing a fantastic job.

Zelda was spayed on Tuesday and got her vaccinations. Dr. Val keeps girl kitties overnight because their surgery is more complicated. I’m particularly thankful for this with my feral kitties because I’m nervous enough about them recovering outside. Zelda came home Monday morning and immediately scooted under the house. I’m sure she wanted to check on Daisy, who was just fine.

I saw Nick throughout the day, but I didn’t see Zelda. I checked the game camera chip, and both Nick and Zelda were on the porch periodically during the day and night, and Daisy made a few appearances as well.

Walter has been scarce lately, but he showed up on the morning of December 1st, right on time to get his Revolution dosage. I’m so proud of him. It’s as if he knows he needs to get that medication, and he appears in time to get it. Of all the cats, he’s the best one for getting his Revolution application.

That’s our outside colony: Walter, Zelda, Nick, and Daisy. That’s a healthy size, and I’m happy to have them current on everything. At eight weeks, Daisy is due for her initial kitten shots, but I can’t get closer than three feet to her, so I will continue to work toward being able to handle her. My real concern is to be able to catch her at six months for spaying.

Shifting my focus to indoors, we’ve had a new development with Sapphire. Three nights ago, I went upstairs to bed, and she was curled up next to Tarzan on my bed. She mostly stayed there while I got ready for bed, and after I got into bed, she curled up at my feet and spent most of the night there.

The night before last, she spent part of the night with Mr. L and the menagerie, but Mr. L reported she was curled up on the corner of the foot of my bed around 1 am. This is a new development in Sapphire’s willingness to be near us. She still won’t let us touch her, but she goes out of her way to be close to us. We are most amused by this, but we certainly wish she’d allow us to handle her.

Rossie is still rooming with Sneaky in the dining room/downstairs bathroom. These two seem to be comfortable enough in the same room even though we don’t see them curled up together. Both seem content to live and let live. Rossie isn’t interested in us handling her either, but at least we see her out and about in the room when we aren’t in there (observed when we step inside the room and Rossie runs for cover from wherever she is). For now, we’re going with this arrangement.

RIP Boomer: ???? – 2016

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 28, 2016 by JeanNovember 28, 2016

Today, I picked Boomer up and put him in a carrier and took him to Dr. Val’s. As I feared, Boomer tested positive for both Feline Leukemia and FIV. I appreciate he trusted me enough to allow me to get him where his suffering could be alleviated. After being far too thin for some time, Boomer recently began gaining some weight and was eating well.  I made sure I was with him at the end.

Cats: We’re Back!

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on November 26, 2016 by JeanNovember 26, 2016

We never left, but our transcriber took off to parts unknown, and we had to wait for her to return. Rossie is in the dining room with Sneaky, and neither one of them is quite sure what to make of that situation, but they mostly ignore one another, and that’s good enough for now. We’ve heard Rossie may be coming back to spending days in the parlor and the kitchen and nights in the cage, but the humans are waiting to see how this latest arrangement works out.

Sapphire still wants to be near the humans, but she runs if they do more than look at her. Ever since the humans came back from San Antonio, Ruby hasn’t wanted to be petted at the top of the stairs. The rest of us, Ajax, Lady, Tarzan, Delta, and Daphne are all just fine and dandy. We get the pets those other cats don’t want, so we’re happy with this arrangement.

We’ve heard discussion about the outside cats. Starting Monday, they say the trap is coming out for Zelda, Nick, and Daisy — that’s what they named Zelda’s 7-week old kitten. You saw her in the video a couple of weeks ago. They want to get Boomer, too. We could tell them visits to the vet aren’t that bad, but that’s none of our concern.

We’ve heard that crybaby, Walter, on the ductwork for the last few mornings. It sure was quiet while he was wherever he was for the last couple of weeks, but we guess he’s back again.

Boomer seems like he may be a little healthier. Maybe it’s wishful thinking? Here’s a recent photo of him:

Cats: Progress on the Experiment

Zelda and Son

Last Monday morning, we opened the door to the cage and gave all the cats the run of the house. Sapphire immediately stepped into the front hall and checked out the stairs. She hasn’t let us near her all week, but she has chosen to be close to us. (Mr. … Continue reading →

Cats: Here’s What I Know As of Now

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on August 13, 2016 by JeanAugust 13, 2016

My last Boomer sighting was on kitty cam on July 30, 2016 at 9:30 pm. He has not been well for some time, and at this point, I suspect he has succumbed to his illness. I have more clarity on some of our kitty visitors. The beautiful male gray kitty … Continue reading →

The We were out of town last week, and the outside kitties were busy kitties! I had to do a few double takes while checking the game camera chip yesterday. First, I woke up this morning to look out the door and saw the feeder had been tipped over and … Continue reading →

Cats: Working Together?

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on April 9, 2016 by JeanApril 9, 2016
working together

Until today, the last time the long-haired gray cat showed up on camera was April 6 at 2am. I’m suspecting a couple of the ferals are working together. I strongly suspect she’s about to give birth to another litter of kittens (or already has between the 6th and today). I’ve … Continue reading →

Cats: Game Camera News

Philosophical Meanderings, Too Posted on February 20, 2016 by JeanMarch 28, 2023

What’s new with the game camera? We’ve been out of town for a week, so I swapped game camera chips and took a look. The dynamics outside are completely different without our dynamic duo of Junior and Sneaky out there running the show. Boomer and Walter are regulars and the … Continue reading →

Boomer (cat)

The outside cats have been giving me some good camera shots. Let’s see if I can find any to share. Walter is still a gorgeous, majestic kitty. Sneaky is confident. This is her territory, and she makes sure others know it as needed. Boomer has been visiting regularly: And Junior … Continue reading →
